HOW TO: Use a third party router on Vodafone VDSL

On Firday afternoon Vodafone UK sent a corporate email telling their support team that they can now give out Broadband username and passwords.

I have now set up my own router, and here's what i did.

Step 1 Ring VF on 08080034515 and get your username and password. The support team member then emailed me my Log in info.

Step 2 Swap your router. Keep your VF router in case you ever get an issue and need tech support as they will not support your 3rd party device

Step 3 In your routers web interface access the WAN settings. Set connection type to PPPoE, enter username and password and leave all settings as default EXCEPT enable 802.1Q and set Vlan tag to 101.

Step 4 Save settings and apply. Your router should now connect to VF. Mine took a couple of minutes to get a connection and another couple from the router showing it was connected to actually being able to access the net

Step 5 After a few minutes the connection dropped, and it would not connect again. After investigation I was told this is to do with VF registering your router on there network. Hard reset your router. Power it down remove the power cord for 30 seconds and power back on.

Step 6 Enjoy

This is just based on my experience of setting up my router ASUS DSL-AC68U, YMMV. However the ASUS is syncd at 73.6meg, when the VF router syncd at 72.1 and I have noticed a marked improvment in performance.

HTH someone

They might manage a text message more easily!  I got a different confirmation by text message when they could not send an email which I had initially aske for.

@Bunn

How did it go in the end? :Smiling: Hopefully things have got better and you've not had to reset the line or anything.

Hi UnPotat

It has gone very well indeed! I only had to put in my VF password and user and it did the rest including setting up the VLAN value.

I accidentally restarted the HH5 when I was fitting cables to it when I pressed the restart button by accident but it has been up and running happily now for over 16 hours without an issue as follows:

Status: UP
Line State: showtime_tc_sync [0x801]

I am really pleased that its dealing with the speed and the errors without any apparent problems

Particularly interesting since VF asured me the line would only run at a max of 39 megs and it is already at 45 megs witha max of around 50 megs.

Keeping my fingers crossed that the errors continue to be dealt with and the line does not cap itself.

I'll keep you in the loop mate.

Thanks again for all the advice. Much appreciated.

@julzzzzzz That's great to hear! :Smiling:

Please let us know if you ever need anything else.

Morning all,

New subscriber here moved over from Plusnet and over many years various providers of broadband dsl and fibre, average connection speed where we are, about 35 mb but it has been fine and quite stable. Our service went live overnight, so just thought I would add in our experience of getting connected using our old long established setup of Openreach ECI modem type 1B connected to Asus RT- AC68U. Hope our experience of initial connection helps someone. Have connected pretty easily, effectively just by changing the PPoE username and password, no other changes made no QOS or VLAN101 set! A word of warning though, obtained our username and password via Live Chat, good result, very effective agent , but was given broadband.vodafone.com  as the username ending, I queried this with the agent and said surely that should be broadband.vodafone.co.uk ? He was adamant .com was the correct setting??  So no prizes for guessing it didnt work!! As many have advised in this group broadband.vodafone.co.uk I can confirm is the correct info. So connected easliy and working for now. waiting to see how relaibility works out, but pleased with how everything has gone so smoothly up to now..oh, new phone line also working, no visists required, well done Vodafone

Hi looking for a little help i have bought a archer tp link D20 and have entered my username and password that i got of VF but i cannot find where to enter the enable 802.1Q and set Vlan tag to 101. If someone can help me out that would be great as this standard VF router sucks.

Thank you in advance for any help.

I believe that router only supports ADSL2+ and not VDSL which is needed for Vodafone's 'fibre' service.

AIUI you could use it with a separate VDSL modem such as the HG612.

Ah yes  just checked my mistake at least it was only a tenner.

I will take note of vdsl support next time'

I didnt check before i bought it just thought most modern routers would support it.
