HOW TO: Use a third party router on Vodafone VDSL

On Firday afternoon Vodafone UK sent a corporate email telling their support team that they can now give out Broadband username and passwords.

I have now set up my own router, and here's what i did.

Step 1 Ring VF on 08080034515 and get your username and password. The support team member then emailed me my Log in info.

Step 2 Swap your router. Keep your VF router in case you ever get an issue and need tech support as they will not support your 3rd party device

Step 3 In your routers web interface access the WAN settings. Set connection type to PPPoE, enter username and password and leave all settings as default EXCEPT enable 802.1Q and set Vlan tag to 101.

Step 4 Save settings and apply. Your router should now connect to VF. Mine took a couple of minutes to get a connection and another couple from the router showing it was connected to actually being able to access the net

Step 5 After a few minutes the connection dropped, and it would not connect again. After investigation I was told this is to do with VF registering your router on there network. Hard reset your router. Power it down remove the power cord for 30 seconds and power back on.

Step 6 Enjoy

This is just based on my experience of setting up my router ASUS DSL-AC68U, YMMV. However the ASUS is syncd at 73.6meg, when the VF router syncd at 72.1 and I have noticed a marked improvment in performance.

HTH someone

Just one additional tip:  When changing the DNS servers try to use servers from different sources such as combining 8.8.4.4 with 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 with 1.0.0.1

*Provided you don't fall foul of getting IPs filtered the Vodafone DNS servers in their regional data centres are actually pretty fast, but I'd still use two different sources!

I have the same problem with the VR2800, I can use use a router connected to BT openreach modem so I know username and password are correct but I can't get the dsl modem in the VR2800 to connect no matter how many resets I do. Set up indentically to the pictures, Do I need to speak with Vodafone to regisiter it?

Have you tried to connect to VDSL and not DSL ?

Yes trying to connect to VDSL

No the router does not have to be registered with Vodafone.  What are the VDSL settings?

Do you have 802.1p=2 and 802.1q=101?

I have the router set up exactly the same as the 2 screenshots on page 15 vlan 101 etc, it doesn't have a 802.1p=2 setting. I have the router working at the minute connected to a standard BT openreach modem so I know the password etc is working.

What happens if you select "Use IP address specified by ISP"

It just asks me to enter an ip address.IMG_0769.JPG

Not what you want then!   The router should get the IP address assigned by Vodafone when it connects.

Does the router show the VDSL connection speed, attenuation etc?

You might find useful information on the Plusnet Community forum.  Vodafone and Plusnet use the same connection parameters apart from the userid and password.

Just comes up with 'check your phone line', I'll check the plusnet stuff
