Solution

Pro 2 Broadband router problems

4: Newbie

We had been happily using pro broadband FTTH on a 500m service on the old black box router and boosters.

our contract expired and the cost was greater than the cost of 900m so we switched.

This started the chain of problems. A new router (Ultra -huge white speaker like item) arrived and we were forced into using it and not keeping the old one.

Now a number of appliances will not connect as I can neither have a 2.4ghz network or amend the channel number on the 5ghz network to allow devices such as Ring 4 doorbell and 2 Ring security camera lights to connect.

I have tried using a guest WiFi but this seems to be broadcast at 5mhz also.

The devices cannot see the 5ghz network but my mobile device has full signal in the same location.

I know the devices work as I can hotspot to them and they are fine, so I know it’s router related.

Iphone app doesn’t allow me to change anything because of Super WiFi so I’m essentially stuck.

Do I need to cancel and move my broadband whilst still in cooling off period or is there a sensible suggestion to resolve the issues?

As further information I am using all 3 VF boosters to get coverage around the house.  None of the Ring devices would connect to these though as they are all within 5m through a single brick wall from the main router

1 ACCEPTED SOLUTION

I’ve found a solution to the issue.

I managed to procure the older black router I initially had.

All setup and working at 100% with zero issues.

I’m super comfortable to say that the Ultra Hub is the product causing all the issues I had with the product and the online customer service is just as bad.

Now you are on Pro II instead of Pro, I have no idea if the old boosters should work.

If they will not supply the later versions of the boosters, i would take this as am opportunity to leave Vodafone and go to an ISP who values you as a customer.

If you activate compatibility mode in the router menu and then connect to the non premium network, it should work

I tried that but the Ring still can’t see then network with the Ring Doorbell.

I’ve connected an old router and can clearly see the 2.4ghz signal.

Vodafone advised my to move the router further away from the front door as this will force 2.4ghz.

can’t understand why the SSID can’t be seen.

Ring Doorbells do not support channels 12 or 13. However, they can connect to all the other available channels.

This might be why your network did not show up on the list of the Wi-Fi networks available.

Google is your friend.

Only vodafone can manually change and lock channels.

Vodafone hardware and CS are terrible. Why they market a product and restrict all of its options are beyond me.

Im waiting to find out whether terminating my contract is cheaper/more costly than purchasing hardware that’s fit for purpose.

I assume the small wall mounted FTTH is the modem and I just need a PPPOE Wan router to replace the Ultra Hub?

It's called the ONT (Optical Network Terminal), but yes that is correct, but you will lose easy access to the phone line.

I also don't know if you could get the Wi-Fi back-up to work with another router.

I'm surprised that Pro II is any more problem to get working than Pro.

I had zero issues with the old hardware.

This hardware the Ring 4 can’t see the 2.4ghz channel but the two additional chimes can.

I could change channels in the old router, I can’t here and the support (11 hours on calls and chat) couldn’t advise they can change the channel.

I’ll ask them tomorrow to try this and see if it shows up for the Ring 4.

The issue is the wasted time for something that shouldn’t be an issue and the fact that the “WiFi Experts” just read scripts.

You weren't supposed to be able to do that.

Maybe not, however how realistic is this advice from VF?

You can’t pick up a 2.4ghz signal close to the router, move the device further away.

surely if a 2.4ghz signal is being broadcast a 2.4ghz only device sees the signal regardless of where the device is?
