I have a Samsung CLX 3305FW printer which connected without any problems to our previous VirginMedia router.
It now connects and immediately disconnects.
Vodafone support suggested changing to a static IP address on the router which makes no difference.
From email stating that static address is enabled this will affect my monthly bill.

There is no charge for a static IP address, but there is no way having one on the router is going to make any difference to printing on your LAN. It may help if you are using cloud print.
How is the printer connected? Is there any help here: Samsung CLX-3305FW Color Laser Multifunction Printer | HP® Customer Support

I wonder if the advice was to assign a static IP on the LAN and give it to the printer, rather than an external static address?

@Cynric I wondered that too, which is why I asked how it is connected, as the CLX-3305FW is Ethernet, Wireless and USB. Although they wouldn't have got an email if support was talking about the LAN.
Edited as I had the interface options wrong.

Apologies it should be FW.
Thanks for the response. It connects by WPS. I confirmed this by pairing from the router by logging on as admin. It confirmed 'Device paired'. The problem is that it just drops the connection and then retries every 10 seconds.
I resurrected an old wireless router which I connected to the router through ethernet. I connected by WPA and key. This stays connected by identifies itself as SEC... which my Windows laptop thinks is a scanner. I can at least print.
With Virginmedia the printer identified itself as CLX 3300 series and could be recognized by Apple Air Print.

Strange. Do you have any boosters named under the same SSID as the VF router? Are you not able to Ethernet hardwire the printer?
Have you tried assigning a static local IP?
Try instead manually typing in the password, the WPS on the VF router plays weird games with me. Or try splitting the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.
If all fails, there is a solution here. You could try switching off DHCP on your old router, and plug it in as a separate access point for your printer? (Though I’m not familiar with VM routers, so can’t say if this will work)
