Wondered how long it would be… BT & EE, O2 & Virgin Media and now, subject to Competition and Markets Authority approval, Vodafone and Three with Vodafone taking 51% of the new entity.
Can't really see how such consolidation of network operators / service providers can benefit the consumer but who knows?

@HappyNomad Depending on just how deep the merger ends-up they can cut-down on the advertising budget 😁

And duplication in staffing, premises, equipment etc etc etc… I understand the commercial reasons for and the outcomes, (whether desired or actual) of mergers I don't understand how mergers within a smallish pool of network operators / service providers - from six to three - can be of any benefit to the consumer.
The proposed Sainsbury/Asda merger was blocked by the CMA because:
“It would reduce competition in supermarkets and online grocery shopping and at the companies' petrol stations.”
"We think that is likely to lead to higher prices or other changes which would be unwelcome to shoppers." [Stuart McIntosh, chair of the CMA's inquiry group]

Hopefully VF will pick up some of Threes pricing (or at least their offerings, which are far superior)... or maybe it will go the other way.
In terms of the merger the CMA is being asked (and likely will) look at it as a question of "what's the greater evil, allowing the market to shrink from 4 to 3 real telcos, or let three and VF go bust and it go from 4 to 2?"

Don't care as long as if they merge they use Three's systems instead of Voda's. If they bring back the problem of calls cutting off after 29 min 50 second again on certain Android handsets, which resulted in me leaving them for Three 10 months ago I won't be impressed at all.
And if they merge do the radio side of it properly! DON'T mess it up like EE did and have customers effectively roaming within the UK between two networks for 4 years causing a load of dropped calls and extra battery drain.

Could the HK Based owner of 3.uk be the cause?
(Does VF hold any gov contracts, or all are on EE and ESN)?

I'm not one to gossip, but China is slowly turning Hong Kong red. I wouldn't invest anything there.
