Why is my new pay monthly sim not working?

I recently signed up to a new Vodafone Pay Monthly sim, when I put it into the phone there is no service and can only make emergency calls. I have waited the 24hr to make sure its not that, but after 24hrs it still says the same. When I bought the sim I have asked for my old number to be ported over and its confirmed the porting will occur on 22/01/2024, does the sim not work in the meantime with a temporary number? Or will it only work when my old number has ported over?

Yes @Dreamz00 , this question has certainly been asked previously and previous threads will come up from the forum search facility.

The SIM will activate on the day the number ports over. There is further information here : What happens on the day my number moves to Vodafone? 

In the meantime, you will still have service with your previous provider.
