Page Access Problems, Possible Dns Issue?

EdBanfield

Hello,

I have been using my E220 broadband modem without issue for quite some time. However I have just bought a brand new laptop (a Sony Vaio) and I am now experiencing page access problems when using the modem with it.

To set the scene

1. I have installed the modem without issue (OS is Vista Home Premium Edition).
2. I can connect to the 3G network without issue.
3. I can load up an initial home page e.g. www.yahoo.co.uk without issue.
4. I can do a search from Yahoo and get results.

However whenever I click on a link from the search result page I get a 'Internet Explorer cannot display this page' error. I can also sometimes get this error when typing the address directly into the address bar (this can include the Vodafone home page!).

This issue is not Internet Explorer specific as I have tried using Firefox and Safari. All the browsers have the same problem.

This would seem to indicate that it is a connnection/DNS specific problems, but after many hours troubleshooting this, the problem remains.

Any ideas/helps/comments are most welcome!

Many thanks,

Ed Banfield

Hey there Ed,

Does sound infuriating, I agree. :(

I don't want to commit myself to a possible cause without having a look at technical data, so I'll send you an email to collect your details and investigate. In the mean time, can you try to disconnect and reconnect several times? Let us know what

Hello Daz,

I have conducted some more testing on this and it get a little more intriguing.

Yesterday I was getting the errors when I was in Oxford (postcode OX12 0DF), however in the evening I travelled to Brighton (postcode BN2 8DA) and tested again (same modem, same computer) and the modem worked fine, I could access the same problematic websites without issue.

This leads me to believe that I this is a location specific issue? Is this possible?

In addition, after re-testing successfully in Brighton I found the software update for VMCLite taking it from version 2 to version 3. I installed this on the modem and rested (still in Brighton) and the modem continued to work.

Do you think that the update will fix the seemingly location specific issue?

Many thanks for you help on this.

Hi EdBanfield

The update may have extended us a lifeline here, :)

It stands to reason that the problem is indeed location based, which is very strange as this shouldn't affect access to certain sites specifically, unless it was a bandwidth or signal issue, which again should still allow the sites to load or produce a different error.

Although the update does not change content control or specific ports, I suspect it's worth a try, I’m willing to stand educated and enlightened on this one, :)

I have this problem in watford - I haven't changed my laptop or dongle and for thee last three weeks I haven't been able to get onto certain websites - I have deleted all cookies and caches etc and have been told by a friend who knows more about this than me and he thinks it could be down to vodafone creating a VPN..
any thoughts on how to rectify would be really apprecited as I can't do anything at the moment!!

Hi kransom and welcome to the eForum

I'm sorry to hear that you are having problems with this. Could you let us know what post code you are in and any example websites that may aid us in getting this sorted for you?

Does this happen at all locations or specific areas?

If you could let us know I'm sure we can get this sorted for you

Thanks

Wayne

Hello,

Problem Fixed!

Further to my recent posts I have now had a chance to re-test the modem in Oxford where I was having the connectivity problems and I can now access the internet successfully.

As the only change I made was to update the VMClite software to the latest version, I assume this helped fix the problem.

There is still a nagging suspicion that is was more of a location issue than a software issue (due to the fact that the same modem/computer worked fine in other parts of the country), though I suppose a combination of location/software issues is also possible.

What ever the issue was, the problem has been solved and I am back on-line, which is nothing but good :)

Many thanks for the support of the forum.

Best Regards
