I am having the same problem. I initially bought a 30 day expiry dongle, installed it, then replaced it with one with no 30 day expiry.
The new dongle works, but have the same problems viz:
CAN'T CHECK BALANCE
The Check Balance button in the Vodafone Mobile Connect Lite software doesn't do anything.
NO PHONE NUMBER
Under the Service Info section in the software it should show the phone number attributed to stick. Instructions say to go Help, Diagostics. Own number field says Not Available.
Would be nice to check the balance easily.
Might need a completely clean reinstall of Mobile Connect Lite. Have uninstalled with the aid of the instructions in

Turned on show hidden files and folders
Deleted C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Application Data\Roaming\Vodafone
uninstalled using control panel
but that did not fix it
Any help would be appreciated.
