S5 Lollipop update - changes to silent mode and menu background

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi,

I updated my S5 OTA last night to Lollipop 5.0. First impressions are smoother performance and new look which is nice, however 2 major bugbears are overshadowing any improvements for me:

1) - Removed "silent" mode. The options now seem to be only are Sounds On or Vibrate, but no silent?? Looking around the web a lot of people are commenting on this, seems Google are pushing "interuptions" as the new mute-mode. It's not a straightforward swap though - unless I'm missing something there seems to be no way of having the phone on silent (i.e. no sounds or vibrations) but still to get notifications / LED indications come through for working in the office / library etc. This seems a stupid ommision!

2) No way to change menu background colours. Going into Settings, Contacts, Messages etc, there are all now a white background by default. I had it set to Black under KitKat which I preferred as it's easier to read in low light (first thing in the morning, at night etc). Why remove this option? Appreciate it'll be driven by Google, but one of the best things about Andriod phones is the ability to customise it and set it up to look and feel how you like. These menus have an iPhone-feel about them now from that perspective - some will not mind it, but I don't like it!!

Again, if I'm missing something and someone can direct me how to silence my phone but still receive notifications, or change menu colours, please let me know.

Thanks

Ian

Hi @Anonymous

Have you tried backing up all of your data and then performing a factory re set?

Cheers,

Hi Laura,

No, haven't tried that, but as it seems a lot of others are having similar issues from looking online, I don't want to go through that and have to set up the phone from scratch if it's going to have no effect.

Is there any news on a 5.1 release date?

Thanks

Ian

After weeks of a enduring a heavily degraded handset I wiped the cache partion which appeared to have very little effect>

I have now carried out a Factory reset which has had a very small impact on resolving the issues and the phone appears to be running faster again, however it is still riddled with issues and i wish i had never gone anywhere near the version 5 upgrade, there really ought to be a massive health warning slapped on it!!

The biggest and costliest issues associated with the Lollipop upgrade is the fact the the phone now struggles to retain a wifi-connection and have thereefore incurred vastly increased 4g data usage, something that if repeated amongst its customer base, Vodafone will benefit from in increased revenues I shouldn't wonder.

Hi @Edmondo

I can only reiterate what Ben has already said above.

Thanks,

Hi @Anonymous

We don't publish firmware dates due to testing.

Our firmware FAQ's cover this in more detail.

Thanks,

Ben

Well said!

Vodafone are essentially offering zero customer service here on products they have supplied, whilst trousering increased revenues generated from the issues that this upgrade has caused e.g. increased 3g/4g data usauge as a result of wifi not working as effectively as it did under the previous version.

I have just had a conversation with a Samsung Smart Tutor over the phone regarding the removal of the mute option. He has advised me to do the following:

Pull down the notification window (swip top to botton on home screen)

Press the icon in top right hand corner (3 sqaures and 2 arrows)

Press the icon titled 'All' twice til it says 'None'

It works exactly like the mute option did!! i was sent a text message and had a test phonecall from the tutor to show that it does work. My phone displayed like it would in sound mode but without the sound (obviously) and the text message showed up on my lock screen.

Thank goodness for that! Back to normal 😉

Hope this helps you too.

Good suggestion GillyN, the only thing to be aware of is that setting interrupt mode to None means exactly that, i.e. no alarms - so don't use this approach to make your phone quiet overnight if you use it as an alarm to wake up in the morning!

If you do want to use the approach you can make it quicker by moving the interrupt mode icon onto the notification panel - the icons you see along the top of the notification window. You can switch around which icons appear hear via Settings, Device, Notification Panel. As you say the icon controlling the interrput mode is rather unhelpfully labelled "All" on this panel.
