S5 Lollipop update - changes to silent mode and menu background

Anonymous

Hi,

I updated my S5 OTA last night to Lollipop 5.0. First impressions are smoother performance and new look which is nice, however 2 major bugbears are overshadowing any improvements for me:

1) - Removed "silent" mode. The options now seem to be only are Sounds On or Vibrate, but no silent?? Looking around the web a lot of people are commenting on this, seems Google are pushing "interuptions" as the new mute-mode. It's not a straightforward swap though - unless I'm missing something there seems to be no way of having the phone on silent (i.e. no sounds or vibrations) but still to get notifications / LED indications come through for working in the office / library etc. This seems a stupid ommision!

2) No way to change menu background colours. Going into Settings, Contacts, Messages etc, there are all now a white background by default. I had it set to Black under KitKat which I preferred as it's easier to read in low light (first thing in the morning, at night etc). Why remove this option? Appreciate it'll be driven by Google, but one of the best things about Andriod phones is the ability to customise it and set it up to look and feel how you like. These menus have an iPhone-feel about them now from that perspective - some will not mind it, but I don't like it!!

Again, if I'm missing something and someone can direct me how to silence my phone but still receive notifications, or change menu colours, please let me know.

Thanks

Ian

Taken from your FAQ:

'Why does Vodafone delay the issue of future software updates?

Before releasing any software updates, we test it thoroughly to make sure it provides the best experience on our network.

Our testing process begins as soon as we receive the software. This often happens once the manufacturer has already released an open market version.

During the testing, we report any issues with the software back to the manufacturer for them to address. Once the firmware’s approved, we return it to the manufacturer and they’ll then distribute this to customers through the appropriate channels.

We do this with every phone we sell, regardless of whether or not the phone contains branded software.'

So why are we witnessing so many problems, maybe your testing hasn't been as extensive as you like to think?

Has it really been nearly 2 months and no one has replied to a very valid question?!

If you test these updates, why does it take ages for us to get them after initial release and then they still don't work?

I've tried the cache reset and aso a factory reset. Pain (Removed in line with House Rules) to sort your phone out afterwards but it was so bad I thought I'd try it. Still no good!

My battery lasts around 6 - 8 hours now, absolutely useless. The camera doesn't focus properly since the update and no one at Vodafone seems to be interested. If I wasn't paying you £700 per year I'd be less upset, but this is extremely poor customer service. I'm a small business user and I can't afford to lose my phone for a few days to go away to Samsung for a fix. I'm sure it's the same for all users, business and personal.

Sort it out!

Hi @MCsound2

If you'd rather not arrange a repair with us, you have the right to visit a Samsung Service Location directly as an alternative.

Thanks,

Ben

Months after starting this tread out of sheer frustration with Lollipop changes for the worse & performance issues - an OTA software update I received last night has brought back silent mode - Hallelujah!!!

Not sure what other improvements / change-reversals this has brought, haven't had a chance to explore it fully yet, and I'm still noted as 5.0 rather than an upgrade to 5.1...or even 5.0.1, but silent mode is back. Happy days!

Not sure if I have just not noticed before but since upgrade the alarm is not on its loudest setting and needs to be moved to maximum each time.

Thank you to recent above posts - i checked for an update...and now have the Silent/Sound/Vibrate mode back... Great...
