SS works when it feels like it?

When I firts plugges in all seemed well. Then I noticed thatI had no signal at all on my phone. I checked and found that the SS had only a red light. So, I reset and waited. Eventually I had red and Internet but no service. Then No internet. Then all three. I hate the fact that I have to leave the SS on constantly and my WIFI modem....is it necessary?  My PC is connected to the WIFI by a blue ethernet cable and the modem is connected to the SS by a white Ethernet cable ....so thye SS has to be close to the modem...is that right?  As you can see I am a novice at all this so I need advice please!
