Vodafone Mobile Internet - Available Options To Allow Phone To Be Used As A Modem

Ren

I'm in need of help.

My home broadband has been disconnected by a technical glitch and will be down for at least 3 weeks, so I'm having to use my mobile to connect the computer to the internet to get my emails and any urgent website checking.

Obviously I'm a little worried about the cost of this so I'm trying to find out what my options are, as I only need internet access on a short term basis.

I've tried dialing 191 to ask about the options of changing my price plan to one including internet, or anythign else suitable, but after being told the extension was invalid for accout queries the first time, and then spending 20 minutes on hold only to be connected to what sounded like India with an appaling line and someone with such a strong accent I could barely make anything out and then got cut off in the middle of it, I've given up on that avenue.

I'm hoping one of the wonderful forum staff might be able to get in touch with the options available to me, ideally by telephone (not sure if they can do that at this stage) as my ability to check the internet is so limited.

I also need to find out what accessing the internet through my mobile is costing me as just checking my emails I would have thought was putting me over the 25Mb allowance give on the up to 50 pay as you browse thingy avaialble on contract phones.

Please help, I'm going insane through lack of internet as it is without all the additional hassle!

Voda offer £20 for 5GB of internet use and as a modem on contract price plans. You can call 191 to add it if that is any help

Thank you both for the suggestions, I'm still unable to contact 191 (there's a term involving a chocolate fireguard that always springs to mind along with the 191 number), the website account page won't let me add or adjust anything regarding priceplan or optional extras and whilst the via the phone sounds ideal, I can't seem to find any prices with my limited internet connection.

I ended up opting for the PaYG mobile broadband dongle, which strangly is slower and less reliable than the 50p per day phone option.  Not to mention how many pages it won't open because of content control!

I'm thinking that perhaps a move to O2 might be coming up soon, at least you can get hold of their customer support people, just a shame cancelling my vodafone contract early is so expensive I'm going to have to stay here a few more months.

Following the conversation last week I've received the replacement SIM card, but it's not active and there were no instructions so I'm not quite sure what I need to be doing.  Curretnly all I get is a "no service" message on the handset.

The £7.50 a month add on will give you 500mb (don't know if that's enough) and the first month is free. I rather think you can get it by texting - the main VF site has a page with all the details.

If the broadband loss is the fault of your service provider, I'd expect them to cover any excess costs.

Hey Ren,

I can certainly understand your worry!

The easiest thing to do is to simply get a Mobile Internet pack for your contract account (there is no Pay As You Go variant) - this will give you 500 megs of fair usage per month for you to tether to your computer. I'm not sure what software you'll need to connect a Motorola as a modem, but you might want to start with their software downloads page. Maybe their PC suite does the job, automatically? Does anyone else have info on this?

Aside from this, we also have the Top Up & Go mobile broadband range, which you're tied into a contract with - free to use when you need it! Why not have a peek at it and see if it's for you?

Let us know how you get on, and if you need any further help with anything, we're here to help.
