hi there ,we had some friends over from the states and i called her 3 times while she was in the uk and i got £29 added to my bill for the calls,please tell me this is a mistake on vodafones behalf

It won't be a mistake, the charges will be valid for calling an international mobile number from the UK. When you call an overseas mobile number the phone can be anywhere in the world and you will be charged the same as when the phone is in the country of origin. The reason for this is the call will have been diverted back to the US and diverted back to the location of the phone to the roaming network.
You could have avoided the charge by giving your friend a UK PAYG number SIM for use whilst in the UK or added Vodafone International.
