GeforceNow bandwidth worse on FFTP than it was on FFTC

Graydog7

After signing up for GeforceNow 3080 last year I was disappointed to find that my existing FFTC (copper wire) Vodafone Broadband always had higher than acceptable "Packet Loss" resulting in the message that "Streaming over your network is not recommended". The bandwidth was always OK at over 50mbps.

I had contacted Vodafone support about this but the issue was never resolved.

When my contract was coming to an end I contacted Vodafone about trying somewhere else but they talked me into an upgrade to Full Fibre at a lower price than I was already paying with no setup fees so I accepted the new service without hesitation.

Two weeks ago on 13/6 an Openreach engineer arrived and installed the fibre, it didn't work that day. I contacted Support who told me it was OK to leave the old FFTC cable along with the new WAN cable plugged in so that we would still have internet and that the router would switch over when the Fibre was activated.

I don't think that was true because after still having no Fibre 4 days later I unplugged the FFTC cable and the Fibre came on.

The problem now is that having "UPGRADED"??? to Full Fibre I am only get between 12 and 29 mbps on GeforceNow and the Packet Loss fluctuates between 0 and 20 depending on the mbps. I have spent hours on the phone to the Full Fibre support team but the issue is unresolved.

I wish I had looked here before "Upgrading"

It's been a week since this chat. No-one has been in touch and the issue remains. I think I'll do what I'm expected to do.  Give up :0(

@Graydog7 - have you been in touch with my team through Social Media?

@Gemma Yes. I have spent many frustrating hours on your Live Chat. (I don't have or want Farcebook or Twitter). Your Chat referred me to a Full Fibre Support phone number where I spent a few more unhappy hours before mentioning the problem here.

I did go back again to the Chat for another hour after following the advice given here and as you can see from the Chat snapshot above, I was supposed to get a call back about trying a Static IP to see if that helped. That was a week ago and I've heard nothing.

For everyday internet stuff my connection is fine it's just clear that Vodafone FFTP is rubbish for game streaming on GeforceNow. I've come to accept that I wasted £80+ for the 3080 subscription and won't bother renewing it when it runs out in October.

I'm sorry to hear no-one's been in touch as expected @Graydog7

For us to access your account to see what's going on, we have to take your details via a secure channel and the only way for us to do that here is through social media.

Alternatively, you can speak to our Home Broadband team via live chat here or by calling 08080 034 515.

I've spent a few more hours being passed around, still have the issue but I did get an email that said this:

Sorry about the continued problems with your broadband service.

We're still working hard with our suppliers to get you up and running as quickly as we can, but we can appreciate that there's now been a significant delay in getting things sorted.

ending with this:

What happens next
We understand how frustrating the recent issues with your service have been, so although we'd love you to stay with us, you're free to switch to another provider - we won't charge you any early termination fee.

This was 7 days ago and I don't think anything has happened yet. The offer to switch without penalty is tempting but as they also point out :  "Just to note, as this is a problem with your line, you may also experience the same issue with an alternative provider."  So it may be best to stay here for now. It would be nice to get an update now and again though.

Still wishing I had not upgraded to FFTP as the FFTC connection WAS suitable for GeforceNow  which uses much less energy than the physical hardware in my PC, something that is very relevant with the increasing energy price crisis. (GeforceNow is mostly unusable on the current FFTP connection)

I haven't a clue what GeforceNow is, but your comments seem rather contradictory.

As they have given you the option to leave penalty free (they don't often do that) I would take it and try another provider,

@Jayach Wrote  "I haven't a clue what GeforceNow is, but your comments seem rather contradictory."

For your information: GeforceNow is a service provided by Nvidia ( a Graphics Card manufacturer ) where you can essentially "lease" a very high specification PC in the cloud to play your existing library of games on. This not only saves you the expense of paying something like £3000+ for the equivalent graphics card along with the other components required for a high spec machine, it also massively reduces the power requirements on the local machine as you are only "Streaming" the display locally. much like web browsing. For example I can play the very latest graphic intensive games on an old 2010 Macbook Pro (with a Windows 10 Bootcamp) and it doesn't even get warm.

This is actually a very "Green" solution and is probably the future of computing (except that too many people are making money selling us stuff).

As for changing provider. As I posted they have indicated that the issue is with the line and would probably not go away if I changed over to someone else.

I hope this has been helpful to you?

Very helpful I had googled it but couldn't figure out what it was. Cloud computing.

Have you any good reason to be sure that is the correct.

The only real way is to try, and you have the perfect opportunity

Are you on Openreach or CityFibre?.

@Jayach wrote:  Have you any good reason to be sure that is correct.

Not really but considering the time I have spent Chatting and Phoning where they would seem to have been flicking switches, pulling knobs, resetting dials, updating modems and generally making me repeat myself over and over I would be prepared to acknowledge that it is something outside of their understanding which comes back to the network I suppose.

I understand what you say about moving on and I am tempted......But, I have so much chat history regarding promises and price quotes that I'm probably wiser to wait and see as I have an answer for just about everything they throw at me. I don't want to have to start at the beginning with a new provider if the issue remains unresolved.

I'm on Openreach.

Plenty of choice then. I simply have no trust in Vodafone being able to resolve anything.
