Solution

Microsoft Teams And Router

Hi All,

Like others, every time I use Microsoft teams, my router dies. If its on wifi or hardwired, during a call, the internet will drop and other devices hardwired in to the router go off. If I connect to my mobile as a hotspot, no problems. Currently on 500 Fibre etc. Pinging around 450 - 520 mbps. The router I have is the normal grey one.

What option have I, only been with Vodafone a few months. Would get my own router but my land phone is connected as an output of the Vodafone router. Is there a fix? Spit the ethernet from the wall so it goes to two routers and only have phone connected to router? Another router that does landline too?

Make sure that it is the router that dying, and not Microsofts servers, which is a problem I'm suffering with at the moment.  Whether it's Teams or XBox Cloud It seems that Microsofts servers currently have a tendency to stutter.  I'm no longer with Vodafone and use my own router, but the MS servers stutter regularly even tough my internet stays up and at full speed to test servers!

Hi ya,

not sure it can be anything to do with Microsoft if it all works fine from work, when using my mobile phone as a hot spot. Plus when teams plays up, all the other devices connected to my router loose connection too. Plus no web pages work. When I was on Sky internet months ago, never ever had this issue.

If it was just teams, I would suggest a possible routing problem via Vodafone, but if the whole router becomes unresponsive, it may just be a faulty router. (overheating?)

Really the only way to eliminate that would be a replacement router.

Do you have to reboot the router to recover, or does it right itself once you stop using teams?

Have you reported this to Vodafone.?

Hi ya,

it sorts it self out after about a minute but drops say every couple of mins. No other website or downloads cause the issue, just teams. Lots of people on here had same issue and changed to a different manufacturer router to fix it. My issue is my land line comes out of the Vodafone router. Can I have two routers on the wall outlet and have the Vodafone one do just telephone (Turn Wi-Fi off etc) Had Vodafone do firmware upgrades etc but still the same

No it's not possible to have 2 routers on the same line, unless you double NAT and for the Phone to work the Vodafone has to be connected first so it can authenticate. Which means all the data would still be going through it.

Having said that, If you had a switch connected to the ONT and two different routers authenticating through it I wonder what would happen? I doubt Vodafone would give both an I.P, address, probably the first to get in would be authenticated and the other ignored (or just error)

Query to forum: Anyone with FTTP ever tried?

It would be possible to use a different router completely and use an ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) to run the phone, but that is a bit technical, see this thread for what is involved:

https://forum.vodafone.co.uk/t5/Landline/Landline-phone-with-own-router-on-FTTP/td-p/2709457

The fact it recovers without having to reboot the router suggests it not faulty, just being overworked.

I know you say it's a common problem on Vodafone, and I have seen other threads, but with Teams being so popular now I can't think it doesn't work for everyone.

No real solutions for you I'm afraid, lets see if anyone else has suggestions.

Hi ya,

yeah understand. I read some upgrades to another Vodafone router and it fixed the issue? If so, I would like to know how to try this.

I don't know anything about that, unless you mean they upgraded to Pro II and got the new Ultra (Wi-Fi6e) router.

Think that was it but not sure what that is? If the standard router won’t do teams, can they not fix it??? Seams to go back 4 years or so with the same issue

Pro II is the more expensive option. It includes a router with better Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi booster/extender and 4G backup.

Read about it here:

I really don't think that has been proven. I know you are having problems, but as I said, I don't think everyone with a THG3000 is. Personally I don't use Teams so I can't be sure.
