Solution

YouTube terrible speed and buffering

Alecmac007

I am on Vodafone fibre so just under a year and no problems getting 10mbps but over the last 5 days I am getting terrible performance on YouTube on wifi on all devices. It either buffers, doesn’t play video and occasionally I get a period of a few minutes with no problems.

I have rebooted router and reset firmware and spoke to  Vodafone but no solution. If I connect to mobile data all is good, and all other streaming video sites work fantastic and my wifi speed is always good. Any ideas?

As this part of the forum is primarily for home broadband, and you are both using mobile broadband, you may find more help here:

Mobile Broadband - Community home (vodafone.co.uk)  (I appreciate you are probably using it at home)

We also have this issue on business 4G. Bandwidth is circa 65Mbit/s download but YouTube is evidently heavily throttled and so buffers frequently. This issue started to occur a few months ago.

Can one of the moderators please provide an update as to the progress of investigating and resolving this network-wide issue?

Hi @Lynxthecat 👋 We were taking examples of this issue a while ago, however this seemed to have been resolved and the ticket was closed. If you are currently experiencing any problems with your connection, please reach out to us via the details in this link and we can investigate this further.

After the improvements I made to my 5G connection and using wired EoP connections for my TV I still have this problem in the evenings. This is 12 months after originally reporting issues with YouTube.

When YouTube becomes unusable I’ve resorted to using a VPN to get around the problem but I really shouldn’t have to.

I was involved with that specific thread, and was quite relieved when my problem was "fixed".

However, shortly after that thread was closed the nightmare started again.

Nothing was actually resolved. Nothing the staffers here did had any effect on this issue. The issue resolved itself. My second episode of this problem again, eventually resolved itself.

This is what vodafone are calling "load balancing". It can happen to anyone at any time. Until this issue is actually fixed there will constantly be posts and threads about it.

I had never noticed how often people re-open old threads.

When the forum software used to take us to the latest unread post, it wasn't a problem.

But now you always get dumped at the first post in the thread, I start reading the whole thing again until I get that déjà vu feeling.

It's very annoying, but yes I suppose I should look at the post date, but it was necessary before.

That should have been wasn't, damn that we have so little time to correct grammar/spelling mistakes.

@Jayach

Try My Settings>Preferences>Display   and set "Linear Format"

Already using it.

It helps find those posts that pop up in the middle of a thread because someone has replied to a specific post, but doesn't help with being dropped at the beginning of the thread. I suppose I could change to newest first, but that just seems weird to me.

Vodafone just need to fix the forum software.

I have those settings too, but I'm using the notifications for all the 5 subforums in this section. I see new threads and which threads have new replies, and the link takes me to the relevant post. Maybe that's why I'm not struggling with this?
