Advice please-rubbish Vodafone help re dropping of connection

I have full fibre 500 MB per second using the THG3000 router.

I’ve never had anywhere near that speed, and it’s usually maximum of 250 MB per second via ethernet.

The difficulty has always been upstairs.

The Wi-Fi has always been rubbish up there,  but the last six days it has been 0 to 30 MB per second.

I spoke to Vodafone last week he didn’t understand me when I told him I had a broken leg and couldn’t go down the stairs to look at the router.

Finally went through this today for them to tell me to upgrade to pro Wi-Fi and pay £15 a month more for the exact same speed. I only upgraded in June.

I’m not very happy with technical support. Today was just ridiculously bad and slow, repeating everything again and again that I’ve done before , finally the manager told me to buy a Wi-Fi extender I asked which one to buy and also why they couldn’t send me one given it’s their shoddy equipment that likely  at fault.

He just said buy any one.

But it seems from other forums that not just any Wi-Fi extender will do it with this router, so could I have some recommendations please or I’m off.

I’m terminally ill, and only go out for chemotherapy.

We can’t get to sky where we are as there is a 100 acre wood right by us, so we rely on iPlayer, Netflix, prime, et cetera. I’m really fed up.

Good luck with the extender.

So are you still using the same router after upgrading? If so the Wi-Fi should be exactly the same.

Hello, yes we are using the same router.
I just can’t understand why the speed dropped so much and is now only 3-7 upstairs.

Vodafone didn’t offer a new router (despite a request) nor an upgrade. They were trying to persuade me to upgrade to Pro broadband which ‘came with WiFi extenders.’ But this would cost an extra £160 a year and I can’t justify that for the speed I am meant to be getting already.

For £160 you could buy a mesh system which would work better than the Vodafone extenders.

Hello,

Thank you for this. If the extender doesn't work, can you tell me what system this is you are talking about, please?

We have put the extender in right next to the router and it shows speeds of 60

Yet router only shows up to 7 at present.

Moved extender upstairs on an extension lead and we have speeds of 230!

Does this mean the router probably is faulty?

If literally right next to the router, then that could just be much too close. Try from somewhere in the same room with clear line of sight and you should see a good speed.

Perhaps I’m not explaining very well.

The router is shoring less than 7 speed.

The extender plugged into the same socket is 9 times faster

Upstairs the router is showing 0-3

on the extender which is now moved upstairs it’s showing over 200

These are all WiFi speeds.

Does anyone think my router is likely faulty. Vodafone have been absolutely useless.

There's a chance that the two are not showing the same thing. The extender could be showing the speed between it and the router, meanwhile the router is showing the speed to the internet. I think some tests may be needed. Could you please try testing from the extender and the router, and if possible over both WiFi and ethernet cable to a test site like https://www.speedtest.net

If the extender is the type that picks up the Wi-Fi from the Vodafone router and retransmits it, no.

If the extender is of that type then the Vodafone router must be working for the extender to work.

Which extender do you have?

It’s a TP link
