IF YOU ARE USING A THIRD-PARTY ROUTER THAT WORKS 100% WITHOUT BUGS.PLEASE PM ME THE MAKE AND MODEL SO I CAN UPDATE THE LIST

The first thing you need to do is ask Vodafone for your username and password. live chat with Vodafone is best because you can copy and paste the name and password into the router. ( some users did write it down wrong. password is lower and upper case. username watch out for zero and o )

https://www.vodafone.co.uk/contact-us/index.htm

https://www.vodafone.co.uk/bbservcd/

FTTC SETTING         ( FTTP is below FTTC)

The setting is the same for all the routers it's down to the isp (the setting page will be laid out differently but the setting are still the same, eg

Vodafone setting are

Vlan ID - 101

enable 802.1q (not on every router)

Username  - ******@broadband.vodafone.co.uk

Username - ******@businessbroadband.vodafone.co.uk  ( for business customers )

Password - ********

PPPoE

MTU Size : 1492

rest of the setting auto detect when the router and the dslam are negotiating with each other

TP-Link Archer VR400 V3 AC1200 Wireless MU-MIMO Dual Band (1st Advanced tab, change the Operation Mode to Wireless Router Mode (the ONT is acting as a modem, hence it will not work if you are in DLS Modem Router Mode). 2nd  Do not enable VLAN ID or it will not work! Vodafone will tell you to set it to 101, if you do this it will not work! Keep the default MTU size (1480), do not change it to 1492, as suggested in several posts in this thread, or it will not work!.

It can be left at "0"!

The usual issue with 3rd party routers is that the username and passwords given are incorrect, just to give you an idea it should be in the format dsl000123456 "at" broadband.vodafone.co.uk  *replace "at" with the @ symbol!

There may be a secondary issue here.  Unless the model number you've used is a typo, the DSL-AC86U is not officially available yet, and the xDSL/g.fast chipsets vary by region and there can be performance issues or even complete incompatibility.

I too have purchased an ASUS DSL-AC68U   Dual-Band 802.11ac Wi-Fi ADSL/VDSL Modem Router. ( @KeithAlger you seem to suggest these haven't been released yet - I was of the understanding they have been out a few years now or are you referring to something else?)

I've followed the guides listed earlier  - PPPoE, username and password from vodafone enable 802.1IQ and Vlan tag to 101. (connecting straight from phone-line, through splitter/filter into the ASUS DSL-AC68U. Vodafone router totally unplugged)  I get a blue dsl light on the front of the router however on the setup page I am getting a user name and password error. I am just going through the process of verifying these details.

I can however connect the ASUS DSL-AC68U via Ethernet to the vodafone router and get a wifi connection. My question is it possible to totally remove the vodafone router and replace with a ASUS DSL-AC68U or have I missed something and the Vodafone router must always remain connected?

The main reasons for me pursuing the 3rd party router options are 1. Poor wifi from the VF router which in part I think is due to the phone line coming in right at the back of the house. and 2. My Alexa constantly loses connection to the internet often at the most inconvenient time so I can't turn the lights on or off!  (I previously had Virgin Media internet and it ran without a glitch for months at a time hence why I am inclined to think its something wrong with the router. All the line tests to the cabinet come back ok.)

My next step is to use ethernet over power-line and connect Vodafone router via lan cable to power socket and then power-socket in center of house connected via lan cable to the ASUS DSL-AC68U. If I have to have the VF router plugged in anyway I might as well move the ASUS router to a more central location.

Anyone any thoughts how to resolve this? I just want a decent connection across the house (Only a small 3 bed Victorian terrace) without multiple boxes and boosters plugged in.

It should be possible to use the ASUS directly, can you share a screenshot of the config page where you are entering PPPoE username, password, VLAN etc and we can give suggestions? It was fiddly but I got it to work with the setup details shared at the start of this thread.

You can just use the ASUS as a wifi access point, which as you say, allows you to locate it elsewhere apart from the router but it adds extra devices that might go wrong and reduces the value of the single point of interface - traded off against the extra support overhead on yourself from using a non-standard router on the connection.

It is worth keeping the original router around (in a cupboard somewhere) because if you ever have issues you'll need to plug it back in to eliminate your equipment as the cause of any issues to get support.

Thanks for your reply's.

Vodafone are now refusing to confirm my router username and password stating that the ASUS DSL-AC68U is not an approved router! This is getting very frustrating!

I'll share a screenshot of the config page - I was hoping to get re-confirmation of the username and password before I try this but it doesn't look like they will provide it again....

Luck of the draw?  When I asked for my PPPoE details (on VF live chat) I don't recall being asked what I intended to connect.  As it happens, my modem, a Draytek Vigor 130, is on the list of approved devices but...

... I believe the Open Reach list of approved devices hasn't been updated since October 2018.  It has no Asus devices on it.

The list is here

Hi everyone,

Our Vodafone router packed up, so I've just picked up a TP Link AC1600 from Argos, but I can't get it to connect.

I have my DSL username and password - I confirmed it was correct in two separate text chats with support.

Following the directions in this thread, I've got VLAN on 101, PPPoE, and have entered the username and password. The router then tests the connection but reports the internet is not configured.

Not sure what I've done wrong, as the AC1600 is listed as a router that works with Vodafone in this thread.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi there,

it’s vlan 911.

Cheers.

Sam

Thanks - I just tried 911, but I get:

Sorry!

Internet not connected. Please reconfigure your parameters. If the problem still exists, please contact your ISP.

Should I reset the router to factory, in case my earlier setups are still in there somewhere?
