How to Set up a third party router with vodafone

IF YOU ARE USING A THIRD-PARTY ROUTER THAT WORKS 100% WITHOUT BUGS.PLEASE PM ME THE MAKE AND MODEL SO I CAN UPDATE THE LIST

The first thing you need to do is ask Vodafone for your username and password. live chat with Vodafone is best because you can copy and paste the name and password into the router. ( some users did write it down wrong. password is lower and upper case. username watch out for zero and o )

FTTC SETTING         ( FTTP is below FTTC)

The setting is the same for all the routers it's down to the isp (the setting page will be laid out differently but the setting are still the same, eg

Vodafone setting are

Vlan ID - 101

enable 802.1q (not on every router)

Username  - ******@broadband.vodafone.co.uk

Username - ******@businessbroadband.vodafone.co.uk  ( for business customers )

Password - ********

PPPoE

MTU Size : 1492

rest of the setting auto detect when the router and the dslam are negotiating with each other

TP-Link Archer AC2300 MU-MIMO Wi-Fi Gigabit Router (Plug ONT cable into Internet port, run Autodetect > PPPoE > add username/pass = connected at full speed), no need for VLAN IDs

TP-Link Archer VR400 V3 AC1200 Wireless MU-MIMO Dual Band (1st Advanced tab, change the Operation Mode to Wireless Router Mode (the ONT is acting as a modem, hence it will not work if you are in DLS Modem Router Mode). 2nd  Do not enable VLAN ID or it will not work! Vodafone will tell you to set it to 101, if you do this it will not work! Keep the default MTU size (1480), do not change it to 1492, as suggested in several posts in this thread, or it will not work!.

(from user) I managed to connect Asus DSL-AX82U modem/router and use it without Vodafone Wi-Fi hub finally. When use Asus router tutorial choose network provider as BT - Infinity. VLAN ID come up automatically as 101 then just copy your Vodafone username and password

The Vodafone credentials are for the router to connect to the ISP. The router will have a predefined credential for local administration via the browser.

I've read a bit more tonight and now have a better understanding of what's going. Page 10 of this thread gave me more confidence and has answered a few questions I had in my head, From what I read, and I quote

"I needed to tell the App that:

1: You don't have a router

2: plug in the cables as instructed and chose PPPoE as the internet type"

Then I can enter the user, password details, the only thing I'm still unsure of is if you have to put the @braodband.vodafone.co.uk after the user name as the tech guy didn't mention that.

Anyway, I'm sure I'll get there in the end and wonder what all my fuss was about. Picking up the new router tomorrow so fingers crossed. 

By the way, one tech guy told if I use a third party router I wont get the same speed and another tech guy told me I would. The best speed so far on the VF router was just over 800 Mbps download and circa the same for upload on cityfiber.

Just to save you some time I'll confirm you do need to add the @Broadband.vodafone.co.uk to the username vodafone gave you 😉

If the 2 ports on the Ultra router aren't enough, just get a cheap switch.

Disclaimer: I've no idea how many ports the ultra router has, I've never seen one.

Just a quick update.

Thanks for all the help and support you guys gave me. I'm up and running now without too much hassle thanks to your advice. It was very easy to replace the VF E6 but without knowing the setting for VLanID I would have never got there, thanks again 🙂

Also, I can confirm both these routers work fine. ASUS AX58U V2 and T-Link Archer AX55. I went with the ASUS in the end as the UI was a lot neater. 

I just wish Windows 10 would allow me to see the router and at least access the USB drive under networks. Works okay on Windows 11, but doesn't appear to be happy with a 2Tb drive connected.

Hi all currently trying to set up the Archer Ax6000 have put in my username and password from VF I've changed the vlan id to 101 then the advanced setup page asks for Voip vlan priority number which I put to 2000 but I'm unsure after that any ideas

If you're served by openreach fttp (white ONT) then leave the vlanid blank. For cityfibre fttp (black ONT) the vlanid is 911.

Only fttc (openreach telephone socket) is 101, which I believe may have reached "stop sell" status so you'll likely see an upgrade to fttp coming soon.

That's it working so thank you, I left vlan blank and changed mtu and now my Tp link archer ax6000 is up and running.

As far as I know, nobody has gotten the Vodafone VoIP to work on anything other than Grandstream devices, so you are unlikely to get it working on your Ax6000. (but do let us know if you do)

Edit: If you are on Openreach, try  without a VLAN setting.
