I bought a package through CPW but neither they, nor Vodafone would take responsibility for any after sales. I called and emailed asking for my contract details so I could cancel (I bought the package for my 92 year old MIL and it just didnt work out) but they just kept saying I had to contact the other company! In the end I just cancelled the DD and of course I now have a letter from the debt collectors!

This is not good @SueTutton , the worst thing you could have done was to cancel the direct debit and stop payment, this would have immediately put you in the wrong and in default.
With you being a third party Carphone customer, the contract details should have been forwarded onto Vodafone and Carphone should have taken full responsibility for making sure the services were working correctly and given the appropriate correct advise and information.
