Is it risky buying someone else's contract phone?

I am looking to buy someone's Iphone 13 Pro from them. They have sent me proof of purchase and IMEI number in the form of their Vodafone contract paperwork. However, I am worried if I buy this phone and they stop paying their contract for example, it will simply be blocked? Thanks.

With the new Evo contracts the phone is separate from the  airtime @kurtt74

The account  holder  is free to sell the phone, the only problem is with the paperwork not being  in your name, hopefully the seller has good feedback and wouldn't consider reporting the phone lost or stolen after  sale.
