Porting route sim only (VF) to sim only (VF)

I'm coming to the end of my 24 month SIMO (early December), given the available VF deals are about as reasonably priced as the price of branded coffee these days, I've looked around and found better and cheaper elsewhere. If I was to choose a new SIMO deal with VF though Carphone Warehouse how do I get my current number to the new sim?

From memory, on previous contract this used to be: transfer to PAYG; wait a month, then transfer number to new sim. I assume methods have improved in the last decade?
