Hi I have purchased an Acer (Aspire One) which runs on Linus/Linux and was advised to purcahse a Vodafone dongle as I am looking for on the road internet..

I have been advised that it is possible to run the two BUT I am having real problems getting the two to even recognise each other.

I have been advised to come to this forum via Vodafone customer services..

Please help as I have take both products back soon and this is my last hope..

Thank you in advance

Close. The link is actually https://forge.betavine.net/frs/?group_id=12...p;release_id=26

The Aspire One is fedora based, but the normal fedora rpms won't install on the One. Instead if you download the beta3-ALL installer and run it then you should be able to connect with 'sudo vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux'

I say should, because it worked for me a couple of days ago but now eats up massive amounts of ram before completely locking the entire machine up. It's probably got something to do with all the tweaks I've made recently, but I've not tracked down exactly which tweak is causing the problem. If you're not the kind of person who starts changing everything on a linux device the moment you get your hands on it then you're unlikely to have the same issues as me :)

Hey now! You may have linked directly to the download page, but did it occur to you that Jemma might actually want to know WHAT she was downloading first? I merely provided the portal page so that anyone can read, understand, and intelligently select the correct download for their distribution if it's what they were after.

A little more "spirit of co-operation" rather than "one-upmanship" would be nice thankyouverymuch :P

I only linked directly to the download page because the portal page links to quite an old version (1.99.17) and not the latest betas.

It has a direct link to Betaforge right there in the first paragraph.
Anyway, we're arguing semantics now... I'll shut up.

Thank you all for your advise, but I am a little lost...

The eeepc that I have does not have a disc drive to put the drivers/software on??..

Do I insert the dongle into my home PC and download the drivers/software then plug it back in??

Also, really not 100% up on all the speak.. Sorry..

any more info would be great!
Thanks again..

eee? that's a different machine to the aspire one. I'll work on the assumption that it's the aspire one you've got for the following instructions.

1) if you have another way of getting the One online then open firefox and browse to the link I posted earlier.
2) download vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux-2.0.beta3-ALL-i386-installer.run. This should save it into your Downloads folder
(if you can't do this, then download the software on another machine and use something like a usb stick to copy the file over)
3) press alt+f2 to bring up the run program dialog box. Make sure nothing is in the text area, click the 'run in terminal' box and click the run button
4) in the text window that appears type the following -
cd Downloads
chmod 755 vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux-2.0.beta3-ALL-i386-installer.run
sudo ./vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux-2.0.beta3-ALL-i386-installer.run
5) Follow the installation instructions, then when it's finished type in vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux and press return (I'm sure the betavine guys could have come up with a shorter filename than that but never mind)
6) if it works you'll get asked for connection details (put web for the username and password, and internet for the apn) and then with a bit of luck it will connect
7) if it doesn't work, try typing sudo before the filename (so it's 'sudo vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux')

After that, you just need to press alt+f2 and type the commands from either 5 or 7 into the run box next time you want to use it (I'll give you instructions on how to create a shortcut once you've managed to get it working)

If you've got it on a pen drive, then instead of typing 'cd Downloads' (which puts you into the downloads folder) you instead need to get to where the file is. Easiest way to do that is to open a file explorer window (if one doesn't open automatically when you insert the pen drive) then you should see the name of the drive listed on the left. Click that and then browse to the folder on the pen drive where you put the file. Then click the file menu, and select terminal. You'll then be in the correct place and you'll be ready to type in the next two lines.
