Dongle Slow Connection After A Week

OK I BAUGHT INTO A DONGLE CONTRACT 18MONTH SMALL BUSINESS UNLIMITED. FOR THE FIRST DAY THE CONNECTION WAS SLOW, AFTER MAYB 10-20 HOURS LATER THE CONNECTION WAS BRILLIANT THIS LASTED FOR ABOUT A WEEK. ITS BEEN 3 WEEKS SINCE IV ORDERED THIS AND THE LAST 2 WEEKS HAVE BEEN REALLY BAD. AND I MEAN REALLY BAD. I THOUGHT MAYBE DUE TO MAINTAINENCE OR SOMETHING IN THE AREA IT WAS SLOW SO GOT ON WITH IT. NOW ITS GETTING VERY FRUSTRATING AS I HAVE ALOT OF THINGS TO DO ONLINE. MY GRANDSON WAS ABLE TO STREAM ( ANY VIDEO/AUDIO HOSTING SITE ) VERY EASY AND DOWNLOAD/UPLOAD VERY EASY ALSO. IT SAYS I'M ON A CONNECTION OF 7.2MBPS WHICH IS INCORRECT. I AM NOT EVEN GETTING 1MB UPLOAD OR DOWNLOAD SPEEDS. MY POST CODE IS BT654AB WHICH HAS A GOOD SIGNAL WHICH I HAVE CHECKED ON YOUR MAP INDICATOR. I HAVE DONE VIRUS SCANS ALSO. STILL VERY SLOW. I HAVE RESTORED MY COMPUTER STILL SLOW. WHY AM I GETTING SUCH SLOW SPEEDS? 6.5KBPS DL 3KBPS UL AND ITS SAYING 7.2MBPS CONNECTION. PLEASE DO NOT REPLY WITH SILLY QUESTIONS AS IM VERY VERY VERY CLOSE TO DROPPING THIS CONTRACT AND TAKING LEGAL ACTION AS THE QUALITY AND FALSE ADVERTISMENT TO THIS CONTRACT IS WRONG. I WAS TOLD IN THE SHOP I WOULD HAVE EASILY 4MPBS DOWNLOAD AND UPLOAD SPEEDS ON MY 7.2MBPS CONNECTION NOT THE UNDER 1MBPS I'M GETTING. AS STATED BEFORE MY CONNECTION 'WAS' GOOD AND NOW ITS AWFUL. HELP! THANK YOU.

I FORGOT TO MENTION IM ON 3G(BLUE LIGHT LIT UP ON DONGLE)

Hi MargaretElizabeth,

Let's take a look and see what we can find out here. Rest assured that any questions we ask are not intended to be "silly" - they're designed to help us narrow down the likely cause of the lower speeds by helping to rule out likely causes of issues. The broadband spees are advertised as "Up to", not exact speeds, however what you're describing is certainly slower than I would expect.

I've had a look on our system and can see that you are, as you say, in an area with indoor strength 3G signal, even with a number of noteable buildings in the surrounding area which could be larer enough to affect the signal coverage such as the school to the south or the Civic Centre to the north.

Firstly, do you have the same issue when you try to connect in any other location? If you're using a laptop and try to connet from somewhere else with the same results, this would suggest that the issue is not tied to level of signal in your area.

Secondly, is the connection constantly slow at the moment, or does it come and go? Is there any pattern to when the signal has been stronger, including the string week previously, for example is it stronger at a specific time of day, or have the low speed periods conicided with bad weather as this can affect the signal quality.

Finally, can you just try setting the VMC desktop to connect via 2G for me and let me know what speeds you see when you try this. This will help to check if there may be a 3G-specific issue.

Please get back to us with this information - the more we get, the bbetter we'll be able to track down what's happening.

Thank you for your response daven. i have no tried the dongle else where as i am unfortunately disabled and can only get out when i have someone to help me about and drive me. i got the dongle as it would have saved me getting a broadband contract for the house only where as my grandson can take it about with him when he visits or needs the internet ergently elsewhere than here! he hasnt reported any problems with it. i am aware there is a school civic center and shoppping center close by. i had no problems with this connection for a week even with these premises in the area. there isnt a certain time or day that the connection is better than others, im assuming your asking this incase on congestion. i cant see that being a problem as it wasnt before and i couldnt see 100+ ppl in my area signing up inside 1 week. the weather isnt bad here either for mid winter. i cannot connect to g2 with vodafone mobile connect as therte isnt an option to. the only options i have is 3g preferred(which is ticked) 3g only(which iv tried) ans gprs preferred and only! at the minute im trying to download a file and im getting speeds of 14kbps and upload speeds of 3kbps. this is very frustrating. it is almost impossible to browse on its own and extinct while trying to browse while downloading 1 file as it takes forever and lags. i am aware that the speeds are 'upto' but the man in the shop (mark) assured me my connection 'would be' 7.2mbps and i would get download upload speeds of 4mbps. nowhere near i am to that not even a fraction. the first week was brilliant connection, its went downhill since. any help is greatful. thank you.

Hi MargaretElizabeth,

If the speed was ok for a week and then dropped dramatically, this points to one of two issues:

- a problem with a site in the area

Or

- a problem with your device. If you’re within your first 28 days then you can get a like for like exchange.

I’ve checked your local site and there are currently no faults.

From speaking with a colleague of mine who could look into this further for us on the network, it would seem that it’s simply a case of a small site with a lot of traffic currently using it.

Tonight in particular, there is a lot of upload activity which is affecting the download speeds.

My wonderful colleague is going to keep an eye on this tonight and if there is still a large amount of data being uploaded, they will see if they can restart the site to see if it helps. :)

In all honesty, due to the time of year, I’m not surprised there is a large increase in uploads as many people will be uploading photos and sharing files etc.

Let me know how you get on tomorrow. :)

All the best,

Jenny

hello jenny. i have went to the vodafone store i purchased to contract and dongle with and got the dongle replaced(incase of fault) and my download speeds are still roughly the same if not worse. at the minute im getting 4.5kbps download and 4.9 upload speeds. this is very frustrating. i could understand it being slow with people uploading over the holidays but its been like this for over 2 weeks now??? at the beginning i was getting download speeds of around 450-500kbps and uploadings around the 300kbps mark. why has this dramatically changed over the 2 weeks?

Hi MargaretElizabeth

Sorry to hear this is still an ongoing issues for you.

If you have had the modem swapped and the same is still happening then this must be down to the signal your receiving in your area.

Did you have your signal checked in store before purchasing the dongle?

All I can say really here is go back to the store explain the situation around your weak signal and see what they can do for you as this sounds like it wont be improving in the future :D

Thanks

Hi MargaretElizabeth

My apologies around the last post since then I have taken a further look into this at your request for you :D

An engineer has been keeping an eye on this over the last couple of days when Jenny first raised this for you and it appears that someone is uploading allot of data through the site however we have tried to reset this to see if it fixes it however it didn't affect it as someone is manually connecting each time to the site.

The engineers are aware of the issue in your area and are closely monitoring this for you however at the moment we can't supply any further information around when this will be fixed but I do assure you we are aware and will let you know if there are any changes.

Again I apologise around my first post as I wasn’t aware that anyone was looking into this until I spoke to another colleague who put me right :D

Thanks for your understanding around this.
