Hi i'm using ubuntu 9.10 with a K3565 - rev 2 USB modem stick 1GB = £15

it works right out of the box, which is great.

my question is now can i get more credit? or check how much credit i have?

is it possible to top up over the phone?

i have set up an account at www.vodafone.co.uk and am trying to register for pay as you talk services online, however, i am asked for my vodafone phone number.

how do i find out what this is?

well, thanks in advance for any help

regards,

jonathan

ok, update,

i used a windows pc to get my phone number, now i have a account set up at online.vodafone.co.uk

hopefully i will be able to top up using the top up now link,

it asks for a debit card details, etc,

new question, if i apply to top up this way will the credit atomaticly be updated, i don;t want to try yet as i still have £14 credit.

will i need to use a windows pc to top up?

thanks again. oh and ubutnu is working hard to get your hardware up and running, if only the phone number of the device was easier to get (i'e without resorting to using others computers) things would be great. lots of people are using ubuntu. maybe it would be worth looking into.

Hi Directive 4,

Ubuntu, ay? Good to read that you're having success with Linux - it's certainly growing in popularity!

If you topup online, you can use any web browser, but if you're using the VMC, you will need to be on the PC to use it I'm afraid. I have every faith that our Linux support will only improve, though, but in the meantime why not head over to BetaVine? It's one of our R&D partners and hosts a lot of info on Linux connectivity. Have a peek and let us know what you think! :)

You have to top up via the website but to register you need the phone number assigned to the SIM, the easiest way to get that is to put it in a phone.

Hi, yea everythings working fine. Beatvine looks like a interesting project and as an open source (GPL) project one i could contribute to. Lots of the info is for older versions of ubuntu and with 10.04 being released shortly testing will have to wait till then. no point fixing problems that may already be fixed ;)

in short the only problem i encountered was getting the phone number of the device, an easy fix would be to include this in the packaging as using a windows pc or a phone is just an awkward workaround. however with betavine coming along nicely it looks like i'll soon be able to able to send and recive sms, use vmc and find out my phone number all on my linux box. nice.

If you use the Vodafone Mobile Connect software from Betavine on your Ubuntu system you get near enough all the functionality of the Windows version ...SMS, Usage monitor etc.

Here's how:

http://www.betavine....cards/os/ubuntu

Install all three packages in the archive, then fire up the VMC software (under Internet)

When the software runs for the first time it needs to create a profile .... i used the "detected" E660 device, even though I am using a K3565 and "prepaid" for the connection type as "Top up and go" wasn't listed.

Hi Jonathan,

I have a K3565 rev 2 Dongle too but running Ubuntu 10.04. Sadly it didn't work out of the box and I needed to fiddle with the settings. Would you be able to confirm the following settings are correct from your own configuration ?

username : web
password : web
APN : ppbundle.internet

thanks 🙂

The settings you posted above work for the newer 3GB for £15 vodafone sims. For the older package that you are trying to use try these:-

user: web
pass: web
APN: pp.internet

I've successfully used both the older PAYG vodafone sim on linux with those settings.
