Solution

No Device Found With Vista 64

monkeyhanger

I have just bought a new HP Pavilion laptop with Vista Home Premium 64 bit. When I insert my Huawei E870 ExpressCard the VMC software will not detect it. The card still works in my old laptop (Vista Home Premium 32 bit)

I checked in the device manager USB devices and when I insert the card, it flashes a few times but it never shows a USB Mass Storage Device. I have tried both the latest version of VMC (9.4) and also the last version (9.3). I am guessing that because the laptop doesn't detect the card I won't get anywhere until that is sorted.

Can you help?

Hi Aviator

I'll double check this with Jon when he's next in. I'll forward this thread over to him and he'll get back to you as soon as he can

Thanks

I have some more progress. I ran safety.live.com which is Microsoft's own scanning site including a registry scanner. This found registry errors which when cleared allowed the install.

Then the problem was getting VMC lite 3.2.1.156 to run. It would not autorun but finally managed to run startvmclite.exe. Then VMCLite ran, initially with only 3G for a few minutes and finally 3G+ with the light blue indicator kicked in.

FWIW I also checked Windows 7 which installed VMCLite and ran under the same conditions as above.

Speeds were good at 3.4Meg down and 700K upload.

So finally we are down to the lack of autorun of VMCLite and consistent results. This forum post is thru the E270 on 3G+

Sadly the posting did not go thru so this is via normal wired broadband. Local Leighton Buzzard 3G probs again I think. Hmmm

Hi Guys,

monkeynager, thanks for posting with the info, I've got a few things you can try to get this resolved.

Firstly, as the device has a green light on it before the VMC software loads it may be worth closing the VMC software (File > Close) and then trying to connect through the dial up connection in place as follows: Start > Connect To > VMC > Connect.

If this fails then as VMC is showing that there is no device detected then it may be the way that Vista has the drivers set, give the following a try:

-Firstly, ensure that the express card is plugged in and that there are no USB devices attached.
-Close the VMC software by going to File > Close
-Go to Start > Control Panel
-Double click on System (you may need to click on Classic View at the top right first)
-Click on Device Manager
-Click on the + next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers
-Check for a USB Composite Device and a USB Mass Storage Device
-If either are present then right click on them and click uninstall
-Unplug the Express Card and wait 30 seconds
-Plug the Express Card back in, if all goes well the device manager should bounce up and down.
-Once everything is steady again run VMC and try connecting.

Let me know how you get on with the above.

aviator, Glad to hear that you've got everything back up and running again, I've had a quick check on Leighton Buzzard and all the sites are performing correctly, I'm sure if you try it again it should work fine.

Hi George

I tried what you suggested but no luck. I first tried the dial up method but it never made a connection. Second, I found a USB Composite Device but no USB Mass Storgae device in the Device Manager so I uninstalled it and removed the card after. When I plugged the card in again, the Device Manager page refreshed a few times and the USB Composite device reappeared. When I started VMC again, it searched for the card but didn't find it and the card has a solid green light on it.

Hey there Monkeynager,

That's a shame to hear :(

I'm not really sure what to suggest next - we're not Microsoft Accredited, so we can't provide much in the way of technical Windows help. Have you tried:

- booting with the modem already plugged in?
- the latest Vodafone Mobile Connect?

Failing this, perhaps a qualified computer/IT technician would be the best to see what's going on with your driver ports  . I do recommend backing up before trying anything!

Please continue to provide any info you can, as perhaps one of our members can suggest a solution! Anyone?

Hi

I've tried uninstalling both the USB Composite Devices and also the USB Root Hub as suggested by HP. After a reboot, Vista installed drivers and lists the Huawei device as ready to use. It also lists it on the secondary port as a modem on COM4. However, I still can't connect using the dial-up Connect-To and VMC still doesn't find the card.

What I did notice is that the express card is taking all 500mA of the available 500mA from the USB port. Is this normal?

Hi Dave

Don't worry this is completely normal.

Did you manage to try Daz's suggestions at all? Could you let me know what happens when you did try them?

Thanks

Hi Wayne

I tried everything Daz suggested and still no luck. I'll have to try the card in another laptop but it's strange that it worked last time I used my old laptop and has never worked in this one.

Hi Dave,

Let us know what happens after you test your card in another laptop as it'll help us narrow down where the fault lies ;)

Hi Paul

I did that last night and it works fine in the old laptop (which was also a HP Pavilion running Vista Home Premium but the 32 bit version). Just to remind you, my new laptop is a HP Pavilion dv7-2110sa with Vista Home Premium 64-bit OS.

Hi Dave,

One last shot from me - can you give the following a try?

Open an elevated Command Prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator. Type the following command and press ENTER.

regsvr32 vbscript.dll

Reboot, and re-attempt the installation. Let me know if there's any change :)
