Problems Installing K3565 Mobile Broadband Dongle

Hi,

Having a problem installing a K3565 USB mobile broadband dongle, bought today from one of your stores. I'm using 32-bit Vista Pro on a Sony Vaio notebook.

It's a white USB stick, with a MicroSD slot in the side. It has a cable, but I don't need to use it. The booklet included says it'as a "K3565 pre-paid VMC Lite9.3 10/08_en_uk"

When plugged in, it starts to install & seems to install a generic USB mass storage device, but then stops with a message saying:

"huawei mass storage usb device failed"

This is the second line in the message - the first says "USB mass storage device ready to use".

Can't get anywhere beyond that. The VCM Lite software never installs.

It doesn't show up as a USB mass storage device in Computer.

On the dongle itself, a green light flashes - I think this is telling me it's got a 2G signal (3G is flaky where I live).

In Device manager, new entries appear under CD-ROM drive for "huawei mass storage usb device" with the "not working properly symbol beside it. A USB mass storage device appears in the USB section, & says it's working correctly.

Having looked at replied to people who seem to have had the same problem, I have tried downloading the latest version of the VCM lite software from here: http://www.business.vodafone.com/site/bus/..._for_the_pc.jsp

Tried 2 versions - the one for the Huawei E220, and the one for "all others". I don't know which I should be going for. However, both give the same problem: once I've clicked to accept the EULA, the software starts searching for the dongle, but stops syaing it can't find one and am I sure I've connected it. "Retry" doesn't do any better.

I've tried uninstalling the USB drivers from Device manager and reinstalling, but no luck.

I've tried ruinning the install with the inbuilt wifi turned off and disabled in "manage network connections" just in case, but no difference.

Two possible problems that might be related to this:

The DVD/CD drive is broken, has been for a few weeks. Haven;'t had a chance to investiagte why, but looks like a hardware fault. It shows up as not working properly in device manager, so for the time being I've diabled it there.

I also have a DUN connection for my C905, which up to now I've beeen using over its USB cable as my main way of connecting when I'm away from a wifi link. This called itself "vodafone 3G" when I installed it via the Sont-Ericsson setup software, & seems to work fine.

I've run Registry Mechanic & fixed any problems, same outcome. Rebooted between each attempted installation, same outcome.

I did manage to get it working on another machine under XP, so I don't think it's a hardware problem.

I've kinda run out of things to check by myself, so any advice appreciated.

Thanks!

Hugh

Hi Hugh and welcome to the eForum

You've come to the right place for information on this! There are plenty of knowledge-able people on here who will be able to offer solutions to issues.

On your particular issue here, I would suggest plugging the modem in and uninstalling the 'Mass Storage Device' in device manager. I would also suggest disabling your WiFi and any other type of connection you have on your laptop.

I have experienced problems with Sony Viao laptops before, mainly because of the amount of Sony customised software that seems to appear on the laptop.

One thing to note is that any symantic software can cause issues. So any software made by them would need to be uninstalled. Norton has been known to cause a few issues.

Let me know how that goes and get back to me, we'll be able to get this sorted I'm sure Hugh.

Thanks again,

Wayne

Thank you Wayne.

Been through all these stages, but still gets stuck at exactly the same place.

No Symantec software on this machine. I use AVG. I tried installing with AVG disabled, but still the same.

I've run out of ideas, so I hope you are right & there are some experts out there!

Searching around, I can see it's not a unique problem, although not common, but no-one seems to have come up with the answer.

Does the CD drive you mention have error 39 or 45 when you look in Properties when you enable it?
In My computer, does the drive for the modem have a hard drive icon and not a VMC icon?
Does that Sony have a drive letter allocated to "memory stick" even when there is no card in the slot?
If yes to the last question, change it's drive letter and then plug the modem in again.

Hi Hugh Look,

It appears our resident Broadband expert vodabusiness may be on to something here! Could you answer their questions and see how it goes?

Hi - thanks for helping.

1) yes- the defective DVD drive shows error code 39 in device manager
2) The modem does not appear at all as any kind of drive in Computer - this is the core problem, I think - the system simply doesn't see it as present at all as the driver isn't installing properly
3) yes, it does appear even when no stick is present. Had already changed it to L - did wonder if there was a drive letter conflict as that's bitten me before, but no dice - still stops at the same place in the install

Thx,

H

Dear K3565 Users,
I had the Get Profile failure Message come up on the screen and another error 1601 when Installing the VMC Lite software and it was because of Windows XP Pro Services Issues. First before you insert the dongle you need to ensure that Windows Install Service is running and then also make sure that Telephony Service is running and Remote Access Connection Manager Service is running. You can do this via going to Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services and when Services window opens then make sure that the following are running before you install the dongle:

1) Windows Install Service
2) Telephony Service
3) Remote Accesss Connection Manager

Thanks All
And this cleared up the Get Profile failed Error message when I was trying to connect to the Vodafone Network and also it allowed me to get the VMC Lite Software Installed. Ok folks have a good day.

PS I would like to apologise to Vodafone support staff on the phone for being paranoid about some files that this software VMC Lite installs on my computer in A folder called Application Data which is hidden in a certain User Directory.

If you disable the Mass storage device that you see in Device Manager under USB controllers, then right click it and choose update driver, tell it not to connect to the internet.
At the next window specify a location for the driver and point to c:\windows\inf then see what happens.
You may end up with a composite device.
Have you got some AV software on there that includes script blocking??

i fixed mine but then got another issue

here is suggested fix

The solution was to goto to 'system>hardware>device manager>click on the little + to open up DVD/CD-ROM drives. Mine showed some yellow exclamation mark, this means trouble. Right click on all the listed DVD/CD-ROM drives and choose 'uninstall' (3rd option). As soon as you have done this reboot your PC.
The drivers will be found and install when you start up. Now goto the website of the people that nake your laptop, my customers was Acer. Download any drivers that have are to do with something called the chipset. Install the drivers and reboot your PC. The yellow exclamation mark should be gone now and no conflict with the K3565 and CD/DVD drives.
We had the K3565
