Problems Installing K3565 Mobile Broadband Dongle

Hi,

Having a problem installing a K3565 USB mobile broadband dongle, bought today from one of your stores. I'm using 32-bit Vista Pro on a Sony Vaio notebook.

It's a white USB stick, with a MicroSD slot in the side. It has a cable, but I don't need to use it. The booklet included says it'as a "K3565 pre-paid VMC Lite9.3 10/08_en_uk"

When plugged in, it starts to install & seems to install a generic USB mass storage device, but then stops with a message saying:

"huawei mass storage usb device failed"

This is the second line in the message - the first says "USB mass storage device ready to use".

Can't get anywhere beyond that. The VCM Lite software never installs.

It doesn't show up as a USB mass storage device in Computer.

On the dongle itself, a green light flashes - I think this is telling me it's got a 2G signal (3G is flaky where I live).

In Device manager, new entries appear under CD-ROM drive for "huawei mass storage usb device" with the "not working properly symbol beside it. A USB mass storage device appears in the USB section, & says it's working correctly.

Having looked at replied to people who seem to have had the same problem, I have tried downloading the latest version of the VCM lite software from here: http://www.business.vodafone.com/site/bus/..._for_the_pc.jsp

Tried 2 versions - the one for the Huawei E220, and the one for "all others". I don't know which I should be going for. However, both give the same problem: once I've clicked to accept the EULA, the software starts searching for the dongle, but stops syaing it can't find one and am I sure I've connected it. "Retry" doesn't do any better.

I've tried uninstalling the USB drivers from Device manager and reinstalling, but no luck.

I've tried ruinning the install with the inbuilt wifi turned off and disabled in "manage network connections" just in case, but no difference.

Two possible problems that might be related to this:

The DVD/CD drive is broken, has been for a few weeks. Haven;'t had a chance to investiagte why, but looks like a hardware fault. It shows up as not working properly in device manager, so for the time being I've diabled it there.

I also have a DUN connection for my C905, which up to now I've beeen using over its USB cable as my main way of connecting when I'm away from a wifi link. This called itself "vodafone 3G" when I installed it via the Sont-Ericsson setup software, & seems to work fine.

I've run Registry Mechanic & fixed any problems, same outcome. Rebooted between each attempted installation, same outcome.

I did manage to get it working on another machine under XP, so I don't think it's a hardware problem.

I've kinda run out of things to check by myself, so any advice appreciated.

Thanks!

Hugh

changing the drive letter is not always workable. uninstall all entries in device manager for just DVD/CD then reboot. goto your laptops/desktop manufacturers web site and download the latest drivers for CD/DVD and but more importantly for something called 'chipset'. Once downloaded install these drivers.
reboot and you will get no DVD/CD Voad dongle clash. Identity crises? you bet...
