S5 Lollipop update - changes to silent mode and menu background

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi,

I updated my S5 OTA last night to Lollipop 5.0. First impressions are smoother performance and new look which is nice, however 2 major bugbears are overshadowing any improvements for me:

1) - Removed "silent" mode. The options now seem to be only are Sounds On or Vibrate, but no silent?? Looking around the web a lot of people are commenting on this, seems Google are pushing "interuptions" as the new mute-mode. It's not a straightforward swap though - unless I'm missing something there seems to be no way of having the phone on silent (i.e. no sounds or vibrations) but still to get notifications / LED indications come through for working in the office / library etc. This seems a stupid ommision!

2) No way to change menu background colours. Going into Settings, Contacts, Messages etc, there are all now a white background by default. I had it set to Black under KitKat which I preferred as it's easier to read in low light (first thing in the morning, at night etc). Why remove this option? Appreciate it'll be driven by Google, but one of the best things about Andriod phones is the ability to customise it and set it up to look and feel how you like. These menus have an iPhone-feel about them now from that perspective - some will not mind it, but I don't like it!!

Again, if I'm missing something and someone can direct me how to silence my phone but still receive notifications, or change menu colours, please let me know.

Thanks

Ian

You will find you can change the background of messages in MESSAGES/SETTINGS/DISPLAY/BACKGROUND STYLE

I fully agree with all the other comments regarding silent mode. I do like the white background in meesages alongside the orange header though, it looks cool to me.

Hi @ramboacdc

I've just checked on the phone for you. It doesn't look like you can have different vibrations settings for different notifications.

However you can create your own vibration pattern (under Sound and Notifications, Vibrations and then create and save it) and then select this as your preferred vibration. This would still be the same for all notifications though.

Thanks,

This as been a disheartening update I have to admit. And a rather stupid one too. I have figured out a way to mute my mobile phone after updating to the Lollipop package, but I do admit to it being a bit tedious after a while.

You MUST make sure your phone is switched to vibrate before carrying our this task

Step one. Go into your phone's setting page which can either be located once swiping your finger fom the top to bottom of the screen and found in the top right corner or can be found in the apps bar.

Step two. After opening settings you'll have to scroll down to the subheading 'Sound and Display'. Click on it.

Step three. Another list of setting will appear, scroll down carefully until you find a subheading that reads 'vibration intensity', once again click on this.

Step four. Once again MUST make sure that your phone is switched to vibration before changing these settings. A little panel will open up and all you must do is slide all of the circles all the way to the left, this will turn on all vibrations for any notifications except your alarm.

Now when your want to have your phone on loud... its not as easy as pulling your finger down on the screen and switching from vibraton to sound. You will have to open your setting and redo everything you have done to mute your phone except from moving the circles to the left, you're now going to move them to the right which will allow the sound and vibration to return to the phone.

... I told you this was tedious.

As for the background...I have no forum for that yet but I will keep you updated if there is any change :Smiling:

Really hope this helped in one way or another. Good luck.

When I looked online.. It says to enable Motions and Gestures and you can then cover screen with hand or turn it over! Haven't checked yet.. as well as other ideas here.. which say to use volume key and turn everything down! But as mentioned here hopefully they'll bring it back quickly on 5:1.. as yes was v useful..

Interruptions work well & as intended by Google, but for some stupid reason Samsung (or Vodafone) removed the ability to specify a time period. So, if you install any app that mutes the ringer, interruption mode will be automatically enabled. I personally have installed this one and it works very well. Watch for the star icon in your notification bar to reassure you that interrupts are enabled.

Given the number of comments on here and on Samsung's Facebook page, would it be reasonable to expect that Vodaphone to pass the message on so that we get the proper firmware update to 5.1 sooner rather than later?

Hi  everyone,

Please see our Firmware statement for further information.

Thanks,

Sarah

I find Vodafone's policy here to only respond by including a link to a standard response re Firmware to be lacking in customer service and customer focus and rather arrogant to say the least.

If Vodafone had actually followed their policy and actually tested the software updates properly then we customers wouldn't be complaining about the impact of these very obvious defects.

Given that some very major defects have been introduced to the customer then I would expect a rather more professional, pro-active and attentive response.

You do realise that the change to the silent mode was actually done by Google and not Vodafone?  This is the new standard that they have decided to implement with Lollipop.  So Vodafone wouldn't actually have any control over this whatsoever.  Perhaps, if you feel strongly enough about it, you should contact Google and voice your opinion there.
