Sim Only Mobile Broadband?

Is it possible to buy the sim only for Mobile Broadband? I was thinking of using an old Vodafone Connect 3G PCMCIA datacard that my friend no longer uses and wondered if I could just go into a Vodafone shop and get sim card for the 30 days - 3GB - £20/month package, saving myself the £49 that is charged for a USB modem?

Is this possible yet? I have a few clients that need data SIM only (contract or PAYU)
None of the operators appear to be offering mobile broadband without the dongle???

I know of two people so far who've gone into a VF store and come out with a contract mobile broadband SIM only, as an HSDPA dongle / card can be had for a lot less than the price VF asks.

Hi Griffmaster and Jave hsdpa,

I completely understand why you might not want to get our dongle, and have had a word with the relative departments and have been informed that there is no reason that you would not be able to obtain this type of deal.

My suggestion is to give our telesales team a call on 08080 408 408. You would just need to explain that you already have a dongle and you should be fine to go ahead with the deal.

Hi Guys

I just wanted to update this thread to make sure that the information is clear adn accurate.

We currently do not offer a mobile broadband option without a modem.

Sales or some stores may offer a Mobile Broadband contract or SIM Only offer without providing the modem but this is not standard operating practice and cannot be guaranteed.

Thanks

Hi all,
It seems there is a solution to the SIM only option. I checked at what price the USB dongles usually sell on ebay.co.uk, and found that it is about £20.
This means if you buy the whole pack with the 1GB preloaded for £39, take the SIM out, and sell the dongle only, you will be OK. Simple calculation says 39-20=19, so you get the SIM with £15 on it for £19. Not bad. That is what I plan to do in the next week.
I feel a little upset that Vodafone are focing me into such kind of juggle, but apparently there are not enough requests for SIM only, to make Voda consider releasing this as a separate product on the market.

All the companies would have you believe that you have to buy their won dongle - it's just a con based on the fact that most people are not technology minded. Everything can be unlocked and SIM only provided.

Hi qwertyjjj

You are correct any USB dongles can be changed and in theory become SIM Free however this is not as simple as you make it sound and will void the warranty if done on a Vodafone dongle.

The main thing is not the dongle but indeed the SIM and we as a network will not sell you a SIM only package for mobile broadband.

Thanks
