Help with ASUS RT-AX 86S not connecting to ultrahub

P1x3l8

Hi...I'm freaking out here.

I am trying to link my Asus router in Access Mode to the Ultrahub. I also have a phone line so they both need to be connected.

I have tried the ethernet from ONT to the Asus - nothing happens and Have connected both together - ONT to Ultrahub LAN and Ultrahub WAN to ASUS LAN and again nothing. It's impossible to get to the ASUS GUI as It won't connect to the internet.

I actullay had this set up recently without any issues (had to do nothing) and have also reset the Asus to factory settings via reset button and did the set up as described in the manual (which i didn't even read before...Please help is you can - TIA :Winking_smiley:

If the asus is put into AP mode then there's no real benefit to running the asus (except maybe better wifi range) . None of the asus features will be available.

How did the gaming go last night @P1x3l8

Hi thanks for asking :Winking_smiley:

Ah OK - Router mode it is then. Gaming wise I played about ten games - 4 or 5 hours and although my lobby time for joining games was a bit up and down, my latency in-game averaged about 20 which wasn't too bad - I have had better though since VF was installed - As low as 13 and quite a few times 15 and 16 at one point. I'll obviously play more later.

With that said, I'm now thinking of (putting the phone aside for the moment) trying the Asus directly to the ONT but although I'm sure we discussed this before, I can't find the posts - I already have the third party router details from vodafone???

There's still AP mode to try before you test the Asus on it's own. AP mode will eliminate the tiny bit of lag created by a second router, and remove the limitations of double NAT. I'm actually pleasantly surprised at what you say about the gaming experience - so many gamer want perfection - constant 100% pefections.. Of course, in AP mode you will lose the features of the Asus router.

Getting rid of the Vodafone router will also remove that latency, remove the tiny extra lag from running both routers and give you the full benefit of the routers features, as long as virtually complete control over settings that Vodafone have removed from their router. HYes, you'll lose easy access to digital voice, but is that really so important?

I'll mention now that whenever I connect my Vodafone router up I lose 10Mbops on the upload. Not so much when we're talking big numbers, but it's still more than a third of my contracted upload speed.

Ok cool - So I'll do some gaming and then change the Asus to AP mode and note the pings. I never realised that being in AP would actually help rather hinder but now that you've explained it I get it :Winking_smiley: I have learned to accept that I will never get 100% perfection but a decent average will do me fine - If I could remain withion the 14-20 ms bracket I would be well chuffed  ;D

I've pretty much decided that in the short term the phone is on the back burner as a. we probably won't need/use it and b) if we do need it it can be done later. I would much rather have a decent gaming life as that takes up a fair part of it and not having a phone line as opposed to a bad ping won't affect my blood pressure lol  I would also add that although my general speeds on pc etc (VF to PC via ethernet) aren't as good as my speeds on WIFI (via pc) with the Asus which is real weird for me?

One thing the asus RT-AX86U/S routers do really well is wifi. For me it was a choice between the RT-AX88U and the RT-AX86U - I opted for the 88 but only because I'm in a small flat with stud walls and I had the chance of a bargain.

I actually tested the wifi last night as well via Ookla and FAST on my iphone and even the blackspots in the back of my house weren't too bad - Not as good as the VF router but it takes a booster as well to achieve that lol I still have my first Asus router (RT-AC86U) that i used for VM before we got the Hub5 which is decent so stopped using it.

Hi...Played a few more games in router mode and latency was as above zverage 20ms. I changed the Asus into AP mode but was unable to connect to it in any way - No Asus wifi, no signal to PS4Pro and no access to GUI - It was the same as it was before so i did the wps thing you advised above and it went back to router mode so not sure what to do now. I haven't changed any leads or anything?

All you should have to do with the Asus is select AP mode and reboot. The Asus will effectively become WiFi for the VF router, so make your preferred network changes on the VF router before enabling AP mode.

Sorry - What do you mean "preferred network changes on the VF router"...Are there settings needing changed before the Asus AP reboot?

Changes can be made later in fact. It's been a while since I used one of these as an AP 😳
