Hi
I have my Voip details, my Asus router access details and requested a static IP. (Caveat: I'm not tech savvy). I need the static IP to retain my landline function using my own Asus router and was hoping for a more stable line.
Since receiving the first static IP, my IP has changed 5 times in less than 10 days - First static then changed to Dynamic IP's four times, then back to a static. I am in Scotland and requested a scottish one (?) and was told several times I had, However every time i checked with various sites I have never been Scotland, so far I have had London, Leeds, Derby and again back in London.
Can someone help me figure this out as I am seriously on the verge of leaving Vodafone because my connection and latency have just been going from bad to worse. My gaming for example is an issue where my latency goes from 23 to 50 plus and it's difficult to even join games now. Before they messed things up my average latency was around 15 and even with VM it was around 22 but it was stable. I am wanting to connect to Edinburgh - Can this be done?

What customer services don't realise there are very few gateways that can issue static IPs. I don't believe any of those north of Birmingham. They are also unaware of the routing issues their implementation of "load balancing" is actually causing. In your case you seem to be getting the rough end of both sticks and you're being issued a dynamic IP just to keep you connected.
As solution would be to just cancel the static IP and use Google's stun servers instead.

Hi ther and thanks again
I'm literally just off the phone to VF - More apologies and I stressed again I needed (wanted) a scottish connecetion. They advised of the 24 hour transition and would call me tomorrow afternoon to check on progress!
What's the Google stun servers - Can I use the Asus with the landline with that? (Had a google and looks very techy)?

What is a stun server?

The whole explanation of our journey to using the digital voice service with our own routers

I no longer use the landline so my memory is gathering rust 😁

Many thanks again for your help with this
I previously read 20 pages from that thread and like the STUN page - I have no idea what they're on about - Way over my head. I'm thinking of just biting the bullet and going back to Virgin tbh... I'm VERY dissappointed with VF and won't be recommending them to anyone - Full of broken promises and a headache from the outset
I'll persist for the short term and try a few things that don't involve the landline and wait with baited breath for my new static IP tomorrow... Probably in Venezuela! I still don't understand why they put me as static then without my permission changed to dynamic - Is that something they do?

New static IP set up ust after midnight in Newcastle!!!! Tried to play Warzone last night and the ping was all over the place - up to 58ms and had to leave a couple of matches - Why can't thry just give me an IP in Scotland? What I don't understand is why this is happening as my BQM generally looks good and I'm usually playing after midnight until 4 in the morning?

As stab in the dark but are you measuring ping with the game servers. These always inflate the latency, and get worse at peak evening times. I wouldn't trust the tbb BQM too much either,it's a ping to you from their servers - wrong direction.
Run a quick traceroute to bbc.com, paste the results here and we'll see how much travelling your connection does.

Hi again
I know what you mean about the game servers but even with VM my in game ping was never more than 22 and until VF started messing about with things my average in game ping was regularly around 14/15 - and overall I have never had any issues joining games? I'm also never playing at peak times - not allowed lol.
Here's my bbc.com ping:
Tracing route to bbc.com [151.101.64.81]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms vodafone.ultrahub [192.168.1.1]
2 8 ms 8 ms 8 ms 90.246.0.1
3 9 ms 10 ms 9 ms 63.130.172.35
4 9 ms 9 ms 9 ms 90.255.251.117
5 9 ms 8 ms 9 ms 151.101.64.81
Trace complete.

Well your IP may be Newcastle, but (welcome to West Yorkshire) your gateway is Leeds.
Now I know from bitter experience that the link from Leeds to Scotland is terrible, but I believe the same can be said now for the other direction. Your connection is travelling all the way to Leeds over vodafone's network before it even meets the internet spine.
I don't know what to suggest. I had to put up with that link for months on end. Online gaming was out as well as streaming any video. The only reason I'm still with vodafone now is simply the price.
I got moved back to my local gateway a few weeks after cancelling the static IP.
