IF YOU ARE USING A THIRD-PARTY ROUTER THAT WORKS 100% WITHOUT BUGS.PLEASE PM ME THE MAKE AND MODEL SO I CAN UPDATE THE LIST

The first thing you need to do is ask Vodafone for your username and password. live chat with Vodafone is best because you can copy and paste the name and password into the router. ( some users did write it down wrong. password is lower and upper case. username watch out for zero and o )

https://www.vodafone.co.uk/contact-us/index.htm

https://www.vodafone.co.uk/bbservcd/

FTTC SETTING         ( FTTP is below FTTC)

The setting is the same for all the routers it's down to the isp (the setting page will be laid out differently but the setting are still the same, eg

Vodafone setting are

Vlan ID - 101

enable 802.1q (not on every router)

Username  - ******@broadband.vodafone.co.uk

Username - ******@businessbroadband.vodafone.co.uk  ( for business customers )

Password - ********

PPPoE

MTU Size : 1492

rest of the setting auto detect when the router and the dslam are negotiating with each other

TP-Link Archer VR400 V3 AC1200 Wireless MU-MIMO Dual Band (1st Advanced tab, change the Operation Mode to Wireless Router Mode (the ONT is acting as a modem, hence it will not work if you are in DLS Modem Router Mode). 2nd  Do not enable VLAN ID or it will not work! Vodafone will tell you to set it to 101, if you do this it will not work! Keep the default MTU size (1480), do not change it to 1492, as suggested in several posts in this thread, or it will not work!.

I think you can add the Asus GT-AX6000 to the list of routers that work well when connected to a modem - it is a beast of a router Reading back, it's interesting that the THG3000 works properly as a gateway, it certainly wasn't the case with the older HHG2500 and on my current BT connection their SH2 doesn't either (not a VF complaint), it gradually poisons the network!

No VLAN for openreach.

101 isn't it?

Not on fttp.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried with VLAN ID option not enabled in the settings, and same result unfortunately (I had tried that earlier too but thought I'd re-try).

The error from the router logs this time, after applying this change and trying to connect, is "ppp0 Timeout waiting for PADO packets"

Just what TP-Link router do you have?

If you factory reset the router it should have a "wizard" that does all the work for you, and you just have to supply the PPPoE details when asked. I got a TD-W9970 off eBay to play with using modem mode on it, and it was a doddle to set up. (although I'm on FTTC, so maybe that makes a difference)

Thanks for the response - I have the TP-Link TD-W9960. That's useful to know it worked for you easily.

I went through the wizard first about 2.30pm this afternoon, with great optimism!

Sadly the connection failed, then I went down the rabbit hole of this post and other debugging and trying other options, and 2.5 hours on chat with Vodafone who basically said they are not going to help as it's not their modem and I should "google it"

I just did a factory rest and tried again with the wizard: same result unfortunately. "CHAP Auth Failure" in logs.

The Vodafone @Broadband were truly shocking on their technical support chat today - it really did turn into a kafkaesque nightmare being passed between 4 people who would not listen or help.

I was hoping it could be a setting somewhere I could change - perhaps it is - but I've got a sinking feeling that when Vodafone do deliver the modem in a week and I plug it in and I'll have the same issue and will then have to call technical support and go through the process and they'll then help as I'l have the router which they haven't delivered yet due to their error.

Open to any other suggestions to try of course!

It could be as simple as your service has never been provisioned - the provisioning server has to be accessed by a vodafone router.

Just suppositioning here.

I wasn't aware it needed to be activated in that sense - if it is a requirement to have a Vodafone router to be connected to activate the service. If so I'm a bit stuffed as they said they'll get the router to us in 3-5 working days and we're already 3 days without internet!

Interestingly the DSL light is on on the Router, and when I run the diagnostics in the TP-link control panel the "Test xDLS Synconisation" says Pass (then the next step,  "Test WAN Connection" says fail).
