Dongle Slow Connection After A Week

OK I BAUGHT INTO A DONGLE CONTRACT 18MONTH SMALL BUSINESS UNLIMITED. FOR THE FIRST DAY THE CONNECTION WAS SLOW, AFTER MAYB 10-20 HOURS LATER THE CONNECTION WAS BRILLIANT THIS LASTED FOR ABOUT A WEEK. ITS BEEN 3 WEEKS SINCE IV ORDERED THIS AND THE LAST 2 WEEKS HAVE BEEN REALLY BAD. AND I MEAN REALLY BAD. I THOUGHT MAYBE DUE TO MAINTAINENCE OR SOMETHING IN THE AREA IT WAS SLOW SO GOT ON WITH IT. NOW ITS GETTING VERY FRUSTRATING AS I HAVE ALOT OF THINGS TO DO ONLINE. MY GRANDSON WAS ABLE TO STREAM ( ANY VIDEO/AUDIO HOSTING SITE ) VERY EASY AND DOWNLOAD/UPLOAD VERY EASY ALSO. IT SAYS I'M ON A CONNECTION OF 7.2MBPS WHICH IS INCORRECT. I AM NOT EVEN GETTING 1MB UPLOAD OR DOWNLOAD SPEEDS. MY POST CODE IS BT654AB WHICH HAS A GOOD SIGNAL WHICH I HAVE CHECKED ON YOUR MAP INDICATOR. I HAVE DONE VIRUS SCANS ALSO. STILL VERY SLOW. I HAVE RESTORED MY COMPUTER STILL SLOW. WHY AM I GETTING SUCH SLOW SPEEDS? 6.5KBPS DL 3KBPS UL AND ITS SAYING 7.2MBPS CONNECTION. PLEASE DO NOT REPLY WITH SILLY QUESTIONS AS IM VERY VERY VERY CLOSE TO DROPPING THIS CONTRACT AND TAKING LEGAL ACTION AS THE QUALITY AND FALSE ADVERTISMENT TO THIS CONTRACT IS WRONG. I WAS TOLD IN THE SHOP I WOULD HAVE EASILY 4MPBS DOWNLOAD AND UPLOAD SPEEDS ON MY 7.2MBPS CONNECTION NOT THE UNDER 1MBPS I'M GETTING. AS STATED BEFORE MY CONNECTION 'WAS' GOOD AND NOW ITS AWFUL. HELP! THANK YOU.

I FORGOT TO MENTION IM ON 3G(BLUE LIGHT LIT UP ON DONGLE)

Hi MargaretElizabeth

My apologies around the last post since then I have taken a further look into this at your request for you :D

An engineer has been keeping an eye on this over the last couple of days when Jenny first raised this for you and it appears that someone is uploading allot of data through the site however we have tried to reset this to see if it fixes it however it didn't affect it as someone is manually connecting each time to the site.

The engineers are aware of the issue in your area and are closely monitoring this for you however at the moment we can't supply any further information around when this will be fixed but I do assure you we are aware and will let you know if there are any changes.

Again I apologise around my first post as I wasn’t aware that anyone was looking into this until I spoke to another colleague who put me right :D

Thanks for your understanding around this.

its ok its a far better explanation than the first! I dont understand tho how someone uploading data through your server could slow the areas connection down? 1 person uploading? are your servers not reliable? i dont mean that ignorantly its a serious question! i could understand if 'one person' was uploading/downloading terabites upon terabites of data through the server to slow a whole area down unless you mean something else? I dont think this is a suitable explanation all the same, especially the 'we can't supply any further information around when this will be fixed' part of it! can your engineers not identify where the datas uploading from and block this person from the server? and what do you mean manually connecting to the site? are we all not doing that? or is the vodafone station being hacked? im a paying contract costumers im intitalled to a better explation! i have to admit im not 110% communication engineer literate so could you help me understand this a bit better as this is redictulous i am now on 1.4kbps download speed! i can just about browse pages let alone upload on download data and streaming is a no go for me aswell. Thank You for your time explaining!

Hi MargaretElizabeth

I may be able to explain parts of this for you. The bandwidth availability for the site is a shared medium, if someone is hogging the bandwidth and uploading masses of data that can then reduce the available bandwidth on the downlink side which seems to be the problem you are experiencing. When Matthew mentioned the manual connecting I think he meant a reset was carried out on the site, which would reset all connections to the site, the offending device must have reconnected and continued to upload the data.

Most companies will have been running on a skeleton crew over the festive period for operational reasons but as Tuesday is a normal day most people will be back in work on Tuesday, assuming Vodafone is the same then the engineers that specialise in this field will be back in the office today.

You're welcome MargaretElizabeth, i've been a Vodafone customer for 15 years and on the odd occasion I have encountered problems they have always been very helpful. Happy I could explain it a little more clearly, I hope you enjoyed the festive break........i've finally finished the turkey butties (if anyone even offers me turkey for the next few weeks they won't receive a favourable response).

Yes Thank You, well you wont hear it from me LOL i dont like eating animals. the other thing i concerned about is im paying for an 'unlimited' package yet vodafone obviously cant give out unlimited data on a shared server? why is this?

The bearer on anything only has a finite resource, on fixed line broadband you are typcially sharing your resource with between 20 and 50 people. There are some complex mathematical equations that predict the liklehood of everyone using the resource at the same time, for example if there are 30 houses in a street all having a landline phone, if all 30 people went to use the phone at the same time a proportion would be disappointed. In the case of radio resources it sounds like a rogue in your vicinity is tying up the lions share of the available resource. Half a mile down the road could be a completely different story as you may be using a different site with more free resources.

I'm sure the bit and byte boffins will be able to ascertain who or what is chewing up all the resources and resolve the issue for you.

Hi MargaretElizabth

I can totally understand your frustration with this. I'd feel exactly the same. As today is New Years Day though our engineers aren't available today. However I've emailed one of my colleagues to look further into this for you.

I'll let you know as soon as I know anything more

Thanks

Wayne
