Solution

Problem Setting Up Dell E6400 With Vodafone Sim

Hi,
I am trying to set up a DELL E6400 laptop with an internal 5530 HSPA Mobile Broadband minicard. At first I had great problems getting Mobile connect to even see the card but I resolved that by switch off the fast boot option in the bios. The system now sees the card ok and detects the 'Vodafone UK 3G+' network at full strength. I have checked that the sim is data enabled by using it in a smartphone and all is well there. However when I try and connect with the Dell a progress bar briefly appears followed very quickly by a error dialog saying "Get profile failed". I suspect that this may be down to settings that I have not made somewhere but cannot find out where.

Any help would be greatfully recieved.

Regards

Just in case it helps I have attached a screen grab of the Mobile Connect app and the error.

Hi Andy,

I had a similar sort of problem with my Dell Mini 10v.

Before going into to much more detail, is your 5530 card actually being recognised as a 'Device' by the Vodafone Connect Software?

Yes, It took a little head scratching but the Vodafone connect is seeing the card fine. It also finds the network at full strength but just fails with the above message when the connect button is clicked.

Since my original post I have also checked out the required VPN settings and these are set to

VPN Internet
name web
pass web

As I believe they should be.

The Sim if used in a smart phone is able to connect to the internet as well.

Still no luck though.

Cheers

Hi Andy,

There are a couple of known causes for this type of problem. My first recommendation would be to upgrade to the latest version of Vodafone Mobile Connect if you haven't already :)

If you're still getting the same problem, go to Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services
Make sure you can find both the "Telephony" and "Remote Access Connection Manager" services in that list, and that both are showing as "Started". If they don't, go into their properties and start them manually - then re-test the connection.

Let me know how you get on :)

Jon you are a life saver!

That was indeed the problem.

The Telephony service was set to manual and not started and the Remote Access Connection Manager was disabled. Set these both to automatic and started them and everything burst into life!

You would not believe how many forums and sites I have looked on for this info.

Take any imeadiate payrise

Thanks very much.

Hi Jon,

As I have had similar problems, could you please confirm that the latest version of the Vodafone Mobile Connect software is the one found at: http://www.business.vodafone.com/site/bus/...latest/p_pc.jsp

Thanks!

Hi Wayne,

Thanks for the confirmation, but I did actually have a problem with that particular version as it did not appear to recognise my 5530 WWAN card under Devices, despite it being listed in my Device Manager correctly, although it did 'see' the 1510 card.

In the end I gave up, and reverted back to using Dell's Mobile Broadband Manager which connected to your network with no problems, and I was then able to browse the 'web' and send SMS messages over the Vodafone network.

Although the GPS option appeared to be activated, it couldn't seem to find any satellites!

I am running Windows 7 on a Dell Mini 10v, if that makes any difference!

Hi Montala

You could always try an older version of the VMC client to see if this helps. - VMC 9.3

Also have you tried everything that Jon has suggested above?

With regards to GPS, you would need to be outside with a clear line of sight to the sky (No buildings/trees etc) It can then take up to 20 minutes to find satellites the first time you connect.

Please let me know how you get on and if you have any more questions just let us know.

Thanks

Wayne
