I solved this problem on my own in the end, thanks to a blog I chanced across and a few tips from other users.

Well three days later and I have news, both good and bad. The good news is that, in prolonged discussions with BT, our broadband speed is back up to 4.219 Mbps. The bad news is that, despite several resets the Sure Signal remains showing a solid red and, now and again, a flashing Internet light.
Note that I did reveal in my opening post that we own a Sure Signal v3 so please can you now advise me wht to do next? PLEASE NOTE that the online guide to v3 DOES NOT offer a guide for a solid red light and a flashing Internet light so please do not suggest I visit that page again.
PLEASE can you help me sort this out?
