Solution

Vodafone connect router DHCP settings

I have posted this into off topic as I can not see any reference to Vodafone Home phone and Broadband.

I have install the router and all is working but there one thing that is missing from the setting of the VDSL router that being a function to turn off DHCP, I have for the pasted 10 year had my own network running at home with a fully working server that is my DHCP & DNS server but for the first time in history I have just sign up for 18 month and got a bloody router that has no function in the GUI settings pages to turn OFF the DHCP server. So for now I will have to wait for 18 months before I can change ISP. thanks vodafone tech team for missing this one. If there is anyone out there that can offer me a firmware update to give me the function to turn OFF DHCP then please post it.

People who want to use their own gear really should just leave

I hate to bring the thread back on topic (user control of DHCP and DNS). I logged in to my router yesterday and found there was a firmware update available - no idea how long it's been there or if it's mentioned in this TL;DR thread ( I was there right at the beginning on 01-12-2015) but it seems that a lot of the complaints we had back then have been addressed ( Fixed IPs, DNS, DHCP, Split band wireless, DLNA)

I've not had the opportunity to test all of them but are we now in a situation where the features are there but don't work, or are we just all still enjoying a good rant even though the feature we were after has been delivered ? :Smiling:

My renewal is coming up and @£23 with no line rental for unlimited 40Meg  FTTC it's not as clean-cut to just walk away for me as I'd thought it would be now those features have been added to the router.

Yeah, I've just done the update check for firmware.

5.4.8.1.271.1.59 to 5.4.8.1.291.1.30.1.6.

Yup, I pressed the "check for updates" button not expecting anything to happen and ended up with the 5.4.8.1.291.1.30.1.6 version

Yes all the new features work for me, the only thing is the wi-fi is not as far reaching as my Asus RT-AC 87U but this is hardly surprising. :Smiling:

Is there a changelog somewhere?

When I googled the firmware number yesterday I got no hits and it seems that someone else is asking the same question re changelog http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/t5/Pay-monthly-products-services/Connect-router-firmware-changelog-5-4-8...

Until Vodafone allows the box to be a modem only it's going to stay in the box it came in haven't even opened the box it came in still fully sealed ny HG612 + pfsense(work) + sophos UTM.

That's OK if you're lucky enough to have your PPPoE credentials.

Pretty sure the config is now there to run the VF Connect as a dumb modem though; you could pass through Firewall + NAT, set a fixed IP, turn of DHCP + DNS and have a different component as the gateway, but tbh I have enough fiddling with IT at work.

I split my WiFi bands last night and have 2.4 and 5Ghz running on different SSIDs. Not that I was having any issues, I just wanted to see if that feature worked. I also disabled 802.11b while I was at it.

I did also notice that the WiFi IP pool size seems to be 24 with a 1 day lease, so the people that need lots of devices attached might have some luck by increasing the pool size and/or decreasing the lease period and/or splitting the bands into two separate pools. I've not explored the "guest WiFi" yet, but again that might be another solution.

So my broadband did indeed get setup yesterday and I managed to just set it up as an almost dumb modem.  With my ASUS AC68U doing the hard work of WiFi/Router/Media/etc...

I say almost because I have sort of left it running in its' own little world a hidden wifi just to make it easy to connect to later and manage if need be.  But it is not broadcasting the SID.

It is working great and ideally I'll get username/password combo from vodafone at somepoint later and be able to dump the additional box - but just now it is great.   I also sort of like that I could open up that wifi/ports on the vodafone box later if I need the extra capavity.

One addition that would be great is the abillity to put in a route from the vodafone box back to my own lan.   Just so anybody connecting to it later would be able to talk back to my main router but honestly I am not fussed too much about that.

So far speeds have been great.   Nice seemless move for me so far.
